Women’s tennis prepares for two-match weekend slate

FORT COLLINS – A tennis season is a journey of countless points, sudden challenges, and new environments.

The Colorado State women's tennis team will travel to California for back-to-back duals, beginning with UC Irvine on Saturday, March 7, at 12 p.m., before taking on UC Riverside on Sunday, March 8, at 11 a.m. Entering the weekend with a 3-6 overall record, the Rams will face their final two non-conference matches before conference play begins.

"Over the past week, we have focused on staying disciplined with our shot selection, competing with intention, and being mentally engaged through every point," coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Our goal this weekend is to stay present, focus on winning a tennis point, and execute the things we have been working on in practice. If we focus on doing our job one point at a time, the results will take care of themselves."

UC Irvine enters the weekend with a 7-4 standing and a 0-2 mark in conference play, including a 7-0 setback to future Mountain West opponent Nevada earlier in the season. The Anteaters will face Oakland on March 4 and Seton Hall on March 5 before hosting the Rams. UC Riverside sits 3-9 overall, including 0-4 in conference play. The Highlanders will play three matches in quick succession, facing UC San Diego on March 4, New Mexico on March 6, and UC Davis on March 7 before facing Colorado State on Sunday.

Traveling to California means the Rams will compete at sea level, where conditions differ from their home courts in Fort Collins. The lower elevation can affect ball speed and bounce, requiring players to adjust timing, footwork, and strategy.

"We're excited for the opportunity this weekend to compete against a couple of West Coast programs," Tran said. "These programs bring a different style of tennis, and it will be a great challenge for our team. It's also a great opportunity for us to compete outdoors and at sea level, which tests different aspects of our game and will help us continue to build a strong transition into the outdoor season."
