Antoine Smith was named Colorado State’s defensive line coach as part of Steve Addazio’s initial coaching staff in January 2020. Smith was elevated to the role of Assitant Head Coach in February 2021. He was removed from the football program coaching staff following a staff transition in December 2021.
Smith came to Fort Collins after two seasons as the defensive tackles coach for Addazio at Boston College. A veteran of the profession with nearly 20 years coaching the defensive line, Smith developed Ray Smith into an All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer in 2018. Following the season, Smith landed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions. In 2019, the Eagles finished No. 4 in the ACC in tackles for loss with 101 with a pair of Smith’s tackles, Tanner Karafa and T.J. Rayam, finishing tied for 3rd on the team with 6.5 each.
Prior to his time at Boston college, Smith spent one season (2016) as the defensive line coach at Texas State and two years (2014-15) at James Madison. During his time at JMU, three Dukes were named to All-Colonial Athletic Association teams including first-teamer Sage Harold (2014) after he ranked in the top 10 nationally in three defensive categories: forced fumbles (4th, 6), tackles for loss (7th, 23.5), and sacks (8th, 13.5). Alex Mosley earned 2nd team All-CAA honors in 2015 and Brandon Lee was named to the third team in 2014. In 2015, the Dukes won a CAA championship and advanced to the second round of the FCS playoffs.
Smith went to JMU after serving three seasons as the defensive line coach at Holy Cross, where he produced three All-Patriot League players. He joined the Crusaders after helping lead Miami (Ohio) to the Mid-American Conference championship and a victory in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in 2010. He also coach All-MAC Second-Team defensive tackle Austin Brown in 2010.
Prior to his time at Miami, Smith served as the defensive line coach at Youngstown State from 2006-2008, with the Penguins winning the 2006 Gateway Conference championship and advancing to the NCAA FCS semifinals. His unit had six All-Missouri Valley Conference selections in his three seasons, including a Third Team All-American in defensive tackle Mychal Savage.
Smith was previously the defensive line coach at Lafayette from 2004-05, helping the Leopards to a pair of Patriot League co-championships and two NCAA playoff appearances. During the 2005 campaign, he helped to direct a defense which ranked ninth in the nation in scoring defense (17.0), 11th in total defense (296.9), 19th in pass defense (166.9) and 28th in rush defense (130.0).
Before moving to Lafayette, Smith spent the 2003 season at his alma mater, Maine, as the defensive line coach. The Black Bears finished with a 7-5 mark, while Smith’s entire front-line unit received All-Atlantic 10 accolades.
Smith spent the 2002 season as the defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Minot State in North Dakota. He helped guide Minot State to the 2002 Dakota Athletic Conference championship, a 9-2 record and a berth in the NAIA playoffs, the Beavers’ first since 1994. That year, Smith helped develop Ian Best into an NAIA All-American at defensive end.
Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and Kinesiology from Maine in 2001, and his master’s degree in health and human performance from Minot State in 2004. He was a three-year starter at defensive tackle and a four-year letterwinner for Maine from 1996-1999.
