The 16th ranked BYU Cougars came into Moby Arena undefeated and left the same way, sweeping the Colorado State volleyball team tonight, 32-30, 32-30, 30-26, The Rams fall to 9-4 on the year and 3-1 in Mountain West Conference play, while the Cougars move to 12-0 and take over sole possession of first place at 5-0 in league action.
Senior outside hitter Tess Rogers recorded a team-high 13 kills, while senior outside hitter Casey Bauer tallied a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs and also tied her career-high with two solo blocks, ending the evening with five total stops. Junior libero Katherine Whitney led the match with 14 digs and senior middle blocker Dre Downs continued her blocking prowess, notching a match-high eight blocks, while freshman setter Ashley Fornstrom recorded six blocks.
BYU sophomore outside hitter Chelsea Goodman led the match with 14 kills and had a double-double adding 10 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Erica Lott and freshman middle blocker Rachel Dyer each tallied 11 kills, while Dyer and senior setter Lauren Evans tied for the team lead with five blocks. Sophomore libero Lindsey Evans led the Cougars with 12 digs.
"We have to be two to three points better," said Head Coach Tom Hilbert. "We also need to commit less unforced errors. We weren't horrible there, but we weren't good either. BYU had seven unforced errors tonight. That's a sing of an extremely mature team. They (BYU) competed well at the end of games one and two and were solid in game three and that's why they won. I thought our blocking scheme was good and we need to get the ball to the middle more often.
Downs has now tallied at least seven blocks in every conference match this season and has notched at least seven in five of the last six matches. She currently ranks 10th in the nation in blocks per game and after tonight is averaging 2.40 blocks per game in conference play to lead the Mountain West.
"Dre was great tonight. Her numbers don't really reflect it, but she was a huge presence for us."
Colorado State will face league foe, Utah on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The match will be televised nationally on CSTV. Earlier this evening, the Utes defeated Wyoming in four games and are now 3-2 in Mountain West play.
