Volleyball Defeats SDSU In Four

The Colorado State volleyball team returned to its winning ways with a four-game victory over San Diego State this evening, 30-32, 30-26, 30-25, 30-20. With the win, the Rams move to 14-7 on the season and 7-4 in Mountain West play, while the Aztecs fall to 14-11 overall and 6-6 in league action.
Senior middle blocker Dre Downs recorded a match-high 22 kills and hit .400 with seven blocks. With the first kill of game one for the Rams first point, she moved into 14th in school history in kills and now has 1,092. Senior outside hitter Casey Bauer added 13 kills and had her ninth double-double of the season with 14 digs. Senior outside hitter Tess Rogers tallied 12 kills and sophomore right-side hitter Tonya Mokelki chipped in 10 kills and hit .429 to go along with a career-high six blocks. Junior defensive specialist Amber Piel, playing in her first extensive action of the season, led the team with 16 digs, while freshman middle blocker Mekana Barnes had a career-high four aces on the night.
"Today was a major-league, big-time performance by Dre Downs," said head coach Tom Hilbert. "I am so impressed by her toughness and competitiveness. Ashley (Fornstrom) was also significantly better tonight and I'm very happy with Amber. Her understanding of the game is good and she's a pretty good little right-back players. Tonight our team was much more energetic and they were much more vocal with each other."
San Diego State was led by outside hitter Melanie Greene who tallied a double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs. Right-side hitter Audra Dent was the only other Aztec in double figures in kills with 14. Sophomore libero Aime Cordeiro led the match with 17 digs, while Brandie Molnar came off the bench to add 10 digs to the total. Middle blocker Lindsey Noll led the team with seven blocks.
Colorado State travels to Utah next weekend to face #12 BYU and Utah on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
