Cross Country To Compete In Regionals

Regionals In Albuquerque: The men's and women's teams head to Albuquerque this weekend for the NCAA Mountain Regionals, hosted by the University of New Mexico. The women's 6000-meter race begins at 10:00 a.m., with the men's eight-kilometer competition following at 11:00 a.m.
How To Advance: The top two teams at each regional meet automatically qualify for nationals and the first four individuals not on a qualifying team also earn an automatic berth. As many as four teams from the Mountain Region in previous years have earned at-large bids to the NCAA Championships.
Tough Competition: Nine of the nation's top-30 men's and women's teams will be competing in the Mountain Region. The women's race boasts five ranked squads, including: No. 9 Colorado, No. 12 BYU, No. 17 Texas Tech, No. 24 Colorado State and No. 30 Weber State. No. 2 Colorado, No. 4 UTEP, No. 14 BYU and No. 30 Weber State will compete on the men's side.
A Look Back: In 2005, BYU hosted the region meet, with the Colorado State men placing fifth with 148 points and the women finishing fourth with 110 points. Josh Glaab earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with his 10th place finish. Rob Watson also finished 16th. Danielle Korb and April Thomas finished 16th and 17th, respectively, to lead the women.

Conference Recap: The women's team scored 44 points en route to a second place finish at the Mountain West Championship, while the men scored 88 for third place. Senior Nicole Feest paced the women's team for the third straight competition, finishing third overall, clocking a 21:14.1 for the six-kilometer course. April Thomas was sixth in 21:24.3, while sophomore Kirsten Anthony and Danielle Korb finished 10th and 11th, respectively. Junior Heather Loseke rounded out the scoring in 14th with a time of 22:07.8. Also finishing for the Rams were freshman Renee Mayer in 26th and sophomore Ashlee Velez in 27th, while sophomore Kristen Hemphill was 41st and Alison Taylor was 42nd. Rob Watson was the top finisher for the men's team for the first time this season, finishing eighth overall with a time of 25:05.5 for the 8-kilometer course. Sophomore Jeremy Freed placed 16th and senior Ryan Kirkpatrick was 18th and Andres Urbina was 20th. Senior David Zakavec crossed the line in 27th, while sophomore Steve Swartz was 35th, senior Nelson Palacios was 38th and sophomore transfer Kip Taylor finished 41st.

All-Conference: Nicole Feest and April Thomas were named to the Mountain West All-Conference First Team, while Kirsten Anthony, Danielle Korb and Heather Loseke were named to the second team. For the men, Rob Watson was named to the all-conference second team.
Freed Honored: Jeremy Freed ran a personal best time of 25:24.55 en route to a 27th place finish at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational. His time and finish earned Freed the Mountain West Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honor. This is the first award of his career and the only time this season a Ram has been honored.
