SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 20 Colorado State played a rare Sunday match hitting a season-best .504 as they swept San Diego State (30-21, 30-24, 30-20) in a match which was postponed last week due to the wildfires in the San Diego area. Jaime Strauss hit a season best .548 with 17 kills and 10 digs while Mekana Barnes hit .517 with 18 kills on the afternoon.
"This was the best match on the road this season for our passing and serving," said Head Coach Tom Hilbert. "Out hitting was just ridicules but when you pass well then we can choose which of our hitters gets the ball. Everyone contributed to this win. Jacque did some great things and Mekana was on fire. We really needed this going into the road trips we have coming up."
CSU (17-5, 10-2) regains the Mountain West's top position with the victory also recording the 12th sweep of the season. The hitting of the Rams was just short of the record for a SDSU opponent which is held by Stanford hitting .505.
In the first game the Rams took the lead early and refused to give in. Things were close to start, but CSU was able to put together two solid runs, not allowing the Aztecs to get closer than three points after the 15-11 mark. The Rams hit .595, a single-game season high while making just three errors. CSU scored 25 points on kills in the game.
The Rams exploded out of the gate in Game 2, holding an advantage of at least 10-points through much of the game. CSU continued to score points on kills with 21 kills. Strauss and Barnes combined for 13 kills as the team hit .494. The dominant performance for CSU continued as they took the third game 30-20.
Tessa Nelson added to the Rams offense with 13 kills on .476 hitting. Ashley Fornstrom finished the match with 57 assists, five kills and four digs. Jacque Davisson used a spot-on serve most of the match on her way to two kills, five digs and a service ace. Libero Katelin Batten finished with a match-high 13 digs. CSU held a 6-3 advantage on the block for the match.
The Rams will face off with Wyoming in Moby Arena Wednesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Arizona for a 7 p.m. match Saturday.
