CSU Head Coach Steve Fairchild
Opening statement: “Well, you saw it; it doesn’t take a genius to know we got out coached, out played. They out classed us in every phase of the game today. They deserve the win. That is a very good football team; we didn’t rise up to the occasion. Getting off to a fast start would have been a key to a game, as they did a week ago Friday to Fresno. Once you get these guys going and doing some three-and-outs, they can make you look silly. We’ve got to regroup. We’re sitting at 3-and-3, we’ve got a couple games before a bye, and we just have to find a better way to play next Saturday night than we did out here.”
On what impressed him the most about Boise State: “I knew the whole week going in, the quarterback’s a good player. He started out, what did he hit, 18 and a row? When I played, I couldn’t have done that on air. We had some shots early that, had we hit it, might have been a different deal. They are really good on defense. Paul Madsen going out obviously hurt us. It took us out of some of the heavy run packages we had. You’re sitting there with some relatively young tackles. They presented a very good front.”
On losing Mike Orakpo: “Yeah, since (Mychal) Sisson’s been out, Mike’s been kind of the leader of that defense. Not having him out on the field is not great, but we have to roll with it. It seems to be hitting us at tackle and linebacker. We’ll suit somebody up.”
On how serious the CSU injuries look: “Paul (Madsen), I don’t know. They can evaluate a knee injury a little easier, and it’s all speculation, but he’s probably three weeks. Mike (Orakpo), you don’t know how he clears tonight. He seemed fine in the locker room, but we’ll see. Aaron (Davis), they were talking about bringing him back in, but I don’t know if that happened, and again I’m sure we’ll know more in the next couple days.”
On failing to have a fast start: “That is the way we have to play to be in this game. We didn’t make those plays; we couldn’t get them out very much. They even out played us on special teams. When you at it, special-teams wise in the categories statistically, Boise and CSU are relatively near the top in just about everything. So you figured it might be a chance on our field to get that advantage, but they out played us there as well.
On what he told his players after the game: “This is unacceptable. We all gotta look at ourselves, myself included. We didn’t coach very well; we didn’t play very well. A lot of good football players in that locker room. I think we’ll be fine. We’re sitting at three-and-three and we gotta look back and figure out how to string some wins together.”
On whether there’s anything positive he can take from this game: “Well I don’t know if I take anything good from this. We got our butts kicked pretty damn good. I don’t really find a whole lot good with what went on out there. We have to state that this is unacceptable and we’re not going to play like this and we gotta make a statement next Saturday night that we are a much better team than we played here today.”
Boise State Head Coach Chris Petersen
On the offense’s performance: “When we get a run game going, we know we are going to be a tough offense to stop. We ran the ball well and that allowed Kellen (Moore) to have bigger pass lanes.”
On Doug Martin and the running game: “He set the tone in the first couple drives but it started up front with the offensive line. We are starting to get into more of a rhythm each week. If we can run the ball like that, good things are going to happen for us.”
On the big offensive plays: “Sometimes it just happens. I think Kellen was seeing things well. It was a well-designed game plan; it really spread them out. I think that plays into Kellen’s strengths.”
On his team’s play after halftime: “I think we were most pleased with the way the team went out after halftime and answered, both offensively and defensively. Colorado State came out and took the momentum from us. It irritated the guys and they came out and answered.”
On the fake punt: “When you have the smartest man in Boise running the punt team in (Brent) Pease, good things are going to happen. If he sees what we are looking for, we run it; if not, we kick it away. He saw it and the kids executed it perfectly.”
On Tyler Shoemaker: “He did a good job. It helps you when you have a bunch of different guys that Kellen can throw to. Kellen was trying to throw to the open guy and his number was called tonight.”
On his team at midseason: “We are getting into a little bit of a rhythm but every week throws you twists and turns. We are going to have kind of an awkward week with Air Force coming to town.”
On Chase Baker’s status: “It’s week to week. Hopefully we get him back next week. He had a pulled calf in practice and hopefully we can get him back.”
On the Big East talk being a distraction: “Not even in the slightest. Not even kind of. The guys that are going to make the decision are going to make the best decision for Boise State. We have 100 percent confidence in them and that’s why it doesn’t distract us in the slightest. We are just playing the season.”
On CSU’s trick plays: “We knew they were coming. We don’t tip our cap; it makes you mad. They were well-executed and I wish we were better in defending them, but that’s why you run them.”
CSU Players
WR Thomas Coffman
On Boise State’s quick start: “Part of our biggest keys were to come out fast and make some big plays early and just keep the tempo up. They got out on us, made some plays, got up big in the first quarter and that definitely hurt us.”
On keeping their composure late in the game: “That fourth quarter was rough. It just gave some other guys the chance to step in and show what they could do. It showed our heart because we do have a lot of heart on this team. It showed some things; well, a lot of things, that this team can improve on.”
On what they have to do to bounce back: “Well we’ve got to just take tonight and just rebound or whatever we need to do. This team, I know, will come back tomorrow. We overcome adversity really well. We’ll come back tomorrow and get ready for UTEP.”
On how good Boise State looked in person: “That team is extremely well coached. They have really good fundamentals. They showed tonight that they can play with anybody.”
On Boise State’s pace: “The biggest thing I noticed was that they were where they needed to be. That was a key for them. They don’t make many mistakes, obviously. That’s the main thing I noticed.”
LB Shaquil Barrett
On whether CSU is better than its 3-3 record implies: “I agree that we’re way better than a 3-3 team. Just the past couple weeks we just came out too slow. Like today, we can’t come out like that against good teams because they aren’t going to let us back in, no matter how hard we try.”
On how hard it was to keep playing when the deficit was so large: “It crushed morale a little bit but you always have to believe that you can make a play to turn things around. But it was real hard to go when the score was like that.”
S Ivory Herd
On his senior advice to his teammates: “Well first of all you’ve got to let it hurt. That’s the most important part. We’re a better team than that and we’ve got to come back next week because this is unacceptable and we’ve got to come out and make someone pay for it.”
On making a statement: “The statement needs to be a win. It’s really just frustrating. That scoreboard, it shouldn’t be like that.”
On playing without Mike Orakpo: “It was hard. Mike’s a great linebacker and having him there helps out the run support. When he left the game it was hard to compensate for him not being there.”
On what surprised him: “I wouldn’t necessarily say we were surprised. We just didn’t come out as fast as we needed to. A team like that, if you let them get on top of you they’re going to keep beating you down.”
QB Pete Thomas
On what they need to do to avoid letting the season slide: “That’s not going to happen. We’ve got too much leadership, too many players on this team to let that happen.”
On the atmosphere, with the whiteout: “It was a great atmosphere. I would love it if every game was like that. Obviously we’ve got to win some games for that to happen. We’ve got to put a better product out on the field but, yeah, it was a great atmosphere.”
On his thoughts after the game, compared to pregame: “Going into the game, we had nothing to lose. I didn’t make enough throws; we didn’t make enough plays. The best teams in the country like that will capitalize on everything you don’t do well.”
On Boise State’s fast start: “We knew they were going to score. We knew they were going to make plays; they’re one of the best teams in the country, if not the best. We just didn’t make enough plays.”
TE Crockett Gillmore
On how hard it was to stop the Broncos’ momentum: “I felt like we were just walking out there, running out there on offense and run right back off. I felt like we got yards on first and second down and they’d stuff us on third down, and we’d have to punt. We needed some explosive plays and we didn’t have any.”
On whether Boise State’s defense was better than on film: “I thought they were bigger defensive-line wise. Their defensive line was the best I’ve seen anywhere, so they did a good job.”
RB Chris Nwoke
On the atmosphere: “It was good football. We had our fans come and support us. We definitely had everything going. We just have to keep our heads up and keep the confidence and keep believing in each other and we’ll have some success in the next few games.”
On what they have to do to come back next weekend: “Believe. Difference between the team last year with something like this is we would have had our heads down. Now we have a lot of people with their heads up. We’ve got to keep believing in each other and keep working hard. Hard work pays off.”
Boise State Players
QB Kellen Moore
On the explosive offense: “Yeah it went pretty well. Obviously, there was a few mistakes in there that we gotta get better at, but for the most part, some big plays. The receivers did a great job, the offensive line did tremendous and the running backs as usual.”
On setting school record for offensive yards: “We got explosive plays. Big explosive run plays. In the passing game we were able to get some explosive plays. We got some quick drives. One-, two-play drives were huge and that changes games.”
On Doug Martin: “Doug did great; the usual Doug. He had some explosive plays to get us going and he’s tremendous.”
On whether this was a more complete game than Fresno State: “Well, I think we got better this week and hopefully we will get better next week. That’s our philosophy; just keep getting better and see what happens.”
On first game in the Mountain West: “It’s just one game. We have a lot ahead of us. We move on and we’ll see what happens.”
On 18 completions in a row to start the game: “It felt like we were executing the way it goes in practice and that’s our goal.”
On only having four incompletions: “Hopefully. Hopefully that’s the type of stuff we have and if you’re executing the way you should, that type of thing should be happening.”
On Tyler Shoemaker: “It was good. That’s kind of the way our offense goes, different guys get different opportunities. Last game Shoe didn’t get a lot of looks. At the same time he was ready for this week and knew he would get a lot of chances.”
On whether the game gave them momentum: “It’s definitely momentum. At the same time we have to take a look at it and see what we did wrong. Off the top of my head, at the end of the half you have to get points out of that. That was stupid on my part. You move on and get better.”
On coming out after halftime: “We had a sense of urgency. The beginning of the third quarter is critical. We weren’t able to do what we wanted at the end of the second quarter and we made up for it.”
On the offense having a short field: “It makes it nice on us when we have a short field. The momentum has turned and a couple plays and hopefully we have a touchdown.”
On the run game: “We talk about it all the time; that’s their (offensive line) opportunity to get some blocks and they were able to this time.”
On talk about joining the Big East: “We don’t talk about it; we don’t care about it.”
On new offensive coordinator: “Certainly there are some minor adjustments from each coach, but bottom line, we still have the same philosophy. We still want to do the same thing. Maybe sometimes there is some wrinkles getting there but we are all executing.”
On his choice for the Heisman Trophy: “I don’t know. That’s for other people to figure out.”
DE Tyron Crawford
On the play of the defense: “Our defense did well and I’m proud of our defensive line. I feel like we played well and I’m happy we did it. The secondary held up and the linebackers played a good game. I’m just happy we all played a good game.”
On Shae McClellin’s interception: “You just expect the unexpected from Shae. He’s just an amazing player and he can do whatever you ask him to do.”
On the third-quarter effort: “Every time we come in from half time, that’s one of the big emphasis. We need to go out there and play the same game we played if not better.”
On winning by 50 on the road: “It feels great. I’m just happy for our offense. I just hope we can keep playing like this and keep having the same feeling.”
WR Tyler Shoemaker
On first win in Mountain West: “It feels great. It always feels great to get a W. Colorado State played hard. Those guys played hard out there. I think it just came down to execution. We have our game plan every week. Some weeks you are going to execute better than others. Tonight we were just really clicking.”
About setting the tone in the Mountain West: “I think we set the standard for us in the Mountain West. We talked about that a lot this week in practice. We let them know that as a new conference member we’re here to play.”
On having over 200 total yards: “It feels great. Anytime I do well personally I’m happy, but team success is more important than individual success. We got a W and that’s most important.”
On being the go-to receiver this week: “I think everybody is going to have their opportunities. Everybody has that ability to stretch the field, especially Geraldo (Boldewijn). Different matchups each week and everybody has got to be ready.”
