LARAMIE, Wyo. – For a fourth consecutive year the Colorado State cross country team began the season by sweeping the Wyoming Invitational thanks to Nicole Peters and Spenser Lynass who each won their respective races Friday at Jacoby’s Golf Course.
Peters took first in the women’s 2.5-mile race, finishing in 14 minutes, 36 seconds, barely edging out teammates Ellie Keyser (14:36.3) and Hannah Pensack-Rinehart (14:36.6). As a team the women dominated the race taking the first seven spots and the overall victory. Kendra Gerk earned a fourth-place finish, with a time of 14:51.3 followed by Kaitlin Hanenburg (15:03.1) in fifth, Sarah Heuer (15:06.1) in sixth, and Whitney Henderson (15:08.1) in seventh.
“Our women’s team had an extraordinary day,” said Head Coach Bryan Berryhill. “They executed the race plan perfectly and the results showed. We won the meet with a perfect score, which is the first time in my career that this has happened for CSU.”
The men’s team also earned a first-place team finish, ending up tied with the University of Wyoming. Spenser Lynass came up victorious in the 4.25-mile run, finishing in 22:01.7. Christian Meyer (22:11.2) and Andrew Lesser (22:44.2) took fifth and eighth, respectively for the Rams. Ben Larson came in ninth (22:45.9) and newcomer Alex Muntefering finished 10th, with a time of 22:46.2.
“I was very proud of the team effort,” added Berryhill. “We were missing one of our senior leaders in Jake Keyser so it was important that a few younger athletes stepped up today, which they did. I look for our men to get better each week as we gel as a team. Four of our top five today were different than last year at this race so we have a lot of new faces at the front for the Rams.”
Colorado State will compete next at the Rust Buster Invitational Sept. 10 in Colorado Springs.
