Assistant coach Dahlberg wins high-altitude race

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Assistant cross country coach Scott Dahlberg won the first annual Pikes Peak High-Altitude Mile Tuesday, running at over 14,000 feet above sea level.
One of Colorado’s 53 “fourteeners,” Pikes Peak rises 14,115 feet in the air and has 43 percent less oxygen than at sea level. Dahlberg clocked 4 minutes, 48 seconds as he crossed the finish line.
Dahlberg, who grew up just outside of Colorado Springs in Peyton, Colo., was in fourth place heading into the fifth lap. He picked up his pace with 400 meters remaining, passing his competition, and he held off the pack for the win.
