POSTGAME QUOTES (Colorado State 31, Nevada 24)
Colorado State, select quotes
Head coach Jim McElwain
Opening statement…
“Against a good quarterback like Fajardo, defensively this was a great performance. We preach don’t look at the scoreboard, just go out there and play, I am not sure they did, and yet give them credit, that’s a good defense and they took it to us pretty good.
Senior CB Bernard Blake
On the team’s mindset entering the game…
“We knew coming out this was going to be a challenge. I had a mindset coming into the game that no matter who I was lined up against, I was going to give them my all.”
On surviving Nevada’s rally…
“It shows our maturity as a football team. We were happy about the win, but we know you can’t have a fourth quarter like that.”
Junior RB Dee Hart
Opening statement…
“It was a good win. This wasn’t how we wanted to win. Coach kept preaching it finish it, and we did. The offense, we take a lot of the blame for it, so we are going to go this week in practice and work on it. We didn’t execute, then I fumbled, that was bad, and we let them back in the game as a whole.”
Senior QB Garrett Grayson
Opening statement…
“We are always happy (to win). It wasn’t the way we wanted to win - it got a little ugly at the end - but at the end of day, it’s a conference win, so we are happy for where we are at.”
On Nevada’s rally…
“You have to give them credit, they are a heck of a football team. Every team they have lost to, they played tough.”
Nevada quotes
Head coach Brian Polian
Opening statement…
“I am beyond frustrated right now. I’m frustrated first and foremost with myself and my staff for not having the team more prepared to play. I’m frustrated with the team and who we allowed ourselves to get in a 31-3 hole. I don’t understand that. What we saw on offense from Colorado State tonight was not a surprise. Unfortunately we had some defenders that were kind of doing their own stuff. We had some guys that we’re not on the same page in terms of what we’re playing which was our fault as coaches.”
On falling into a big deficit in the first half…
“We didn’t make plays. We had a corner route wide open for a touchdown that we overthrew. We took some deep shot, had our hands on the ball and didn’t make the plays. The plan was fine. Obviously I’d like to run the ball better but we’re banged up and young on the offensive line. We were going to have to throw the ball and take some shots and it the first half we did not make those plays and in the second half we did. We simply executed better and made some plays in the second half.”
On Nevada’s 21-unanswered points and near-comeback…
“I’m proud of their heart. Anybody who wants to deny isn’t being fair to kids. But I told them in the locker room, no one is going to talk about the officiating but me. The officials had nothing to do with us being down 31-3. And that’s the truth. We put ourselves in that hole by not executing on offense and making plays, and by losing our poise on defense and by not doing our jobs.”
Junior defensive end Lenny Jones
On the team’s performance…
“As a team we have to play better for four quarters. Coach Polian told us in the locker room that we still have a chance to achieve everything that we want to achieve but we just have to put it together for four quarters.”
On the Pack’s close losses this season…
“We had the chance to win all three of the games that we’ve lost. You almost want to say that you’d rather lose by a large margin than have it be so close. But it’s definitely a learning experience and as we grow from these losses I feel like later on that type of stuff won’t happen. We’ll learn to put quarter after quarter together. Teams won’t even be in games with us if we do that.”
Senior quarterback Cody Fajardo
On the 31-24 defeat to Colorado State compared to the loss against Boise State…
“They’re both losses. We had a chance to win the game at end there but they feel the same way, both Mountain West games obviously. This one hurt a little bit more because the guys fought back to get into good position at the end but losing two-straight is tough. But the guys did a good job of putting it behind us. Coach Rolovich told me that failure is a bruise, not a tattoo. That helped me get through the week and I’ll use that’s make motto to get me through this week.”
On Colorado’s State defense…
“We had a good second half adjustments by the coaches. They run a unique coverage, something we don’t see too often. So the first half was figuring out how they were going to try and play and the second half we could exploit them a little bit more.”
