FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams (9-1, 5-1 MW) extended the nation’s fourth-longest winning streak to eight games on Saturday evening with a convincing 49-22 win over the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors (2-8, 1-4 MW) at Hughes Stadium. The Rams are now winners of 15 of their last 18 games overall, and their eight-game win streak is the program’s longest streak since 1997.
"I thought our guys came out focused," Head Coach Jim McElwain said. "We wanted to be complete, and the guys have really been talking about the finishing part of it. I thought we had a fast start, and then we focused on the finish."
The offense, which has been putting points on the board at a historic rate for Colorado State, continued its stellar play. The Rams amassed 580 total yards of offense, marking the 13th 500-yard effort under Head Coach, while piling on seven touchdown drives.
Senior quarterback Garrett Grayson broke into the record books once again with 278 yards passing and four touchdowns, putting him atop the CSU’s all-time single-season record book with 26 passing touchdowns. Additionally, Grayson is the first Colorado State quarterback to throw for four-or-more touchdowns in three games in his career. The senior has registered all three of those games this season.
The ground game was equally effective for the Rams, picking up 293 yards rushing as a team, led by a 115-yard effort from junior running back Dee Hart, his fifth 100-yard game of the year. With both the air and ground game clicking on all cylinders, Grayson and the Rams proved to be a hard team to stop, as evidenced by the team’s first drive.
Taking the opening kickoff, Grayson orchestrated a quick seven-play 75-yard drive which saw wide receiver Elroy Masters find the end zone for the first time in his career on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Grayson. The drive took just 3:00 off the clock, as quick scoring drives became a theme of the night.
The Rainbow Warriors trimmed the lead in the first quarter thanks to a couple of key special teams’ plays. After pinning CSU on its own two yard line, Hawai’i recorded a safety after a botched handoff exchange in the end zone with 8:19 left in the first quarter. Hawai’i added a 40-yard field goal from Tyler Hadden with 3:58 left in the first quarter to make it 7-5, but that would be as close as it would get to CSU.
On its next possession, CSU made quick work of UH’s defense with a 52-yard strike off a play-action pass from Grayson to senior wide receiver Charles Lovett, who finished with a career-high 134 receiving yards, to take a 14-5 lead with 2:31 left in the opening quarter. The Rams needed just four plays and 1:25 to find the end zone.
The big plays and quick scores continued for Colorado State right into the opening plays of the second quarter when Grayson found tight end Steven Walker open for his third touchdown of the night, a 30-yard pass down the seam. On that drive, the Rams once again used little clock, just 1:18, to go 74 yards down the field in just four plays.
Hawai’i responded with another field goal from Hadden, a 36-yarder, after recovering a muffed punt to give them another opportunity at scoring. Once again though, Colorado State came charging right back with an efficient scoring drive. With their longest drive of the first half, the Rams used 3:23 to move the ball 68 yards in eight plays before once again finding the end zone. On the scoring play, junior running back Treyous Jarrells bounced to the right tackle and burst through for a 9-yard touchdown to push the lead to 28-8 heading into halftime. Jarrells finished the day with 69 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 12 carries.
If there was any fear as to how the Rams would come out of the halftime with a 20-point lead, that worry was quickly laid to rest in the opening plays. On Hawai’i’s first offensive play of the second half, CSU’s sophomore defensive back, Preston Hodges, forced a fumble which senior defensive back Bernard Blake pounced on to give the Rams the ball deep in UH territory. Two plays later, Grayson found freshman wide receiver Xavier Williams open for a 16-yard touchdown to push the lead to 35-8 with 14:01 left in the third quarter.
On its next drive, Hawai’i put forth its best drive of the night. The Rainbow Warriors methodically moved the ball 75 yards down the field in 12 plays and found the end zone for the first time with a 2-yard touchdown rush from Joey Iosefa with 8:56 left in the third quarter.
As they had all night, the Rams once again came back with their own scoring drive. After receiving the kickoff and going out of bounds at its own six yard line, CSU needed only six plays to go 94 yards for a touchdown. Hart finished off the 94-yard drive, which is CSU’s longest scoring drive of the season, with a 7-yard touchdown rush to put the Rams ahead 42-15 with 6:39 left in the third quarter.
Both Hawai’i and Colorado State scored touchdowns on their next drives, respectively, with the Rainbow Warriors finding the end zone from 17 yards out with a pass from Ikaika Woolsey to Scott Harding. The Rams capped off a 75-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown rush from Jarrells on the first play of the fourth quarter to push the score to 49-22.
While Colorado State's offense grabbed the headlines, the defense put forth one of its best efforts of the year. Hawai'i's quarterback, Woolsey, was held to just 16-of-47 passing for 192 yards with two interceptions to go along with his one touchdown pass. The Rainbow Warriors committed three turnovers on the day, and on the ground were limited to just 3.9 yards per carry.
With a 27-point victory over Hawai’i, Colorado State has now three games this season by at least four possessions. This is the first time the Rams have done this in a single season since 1997.
"Sitting and just reflecting on how much these guys have committed since they went home for winter break and came back for RamU, I think they've really turned into a football team," McElwain said. "I can't tell you how proud I am of them, and how proud I am for the state of Colorado and this university. I'm proud for the Ram fans that support these guys because they're doing something special."
Colorado State will have a bye week before returning to the field to take on the New Mexico Lobos at home on Nov. 22 for Senior Day. The game will kick off at 11:30 a.m. MT and will be televised on ROOT Sports.
