TAMPA, Fla. - Senior tight end Kivon Cartwright will compete in the 91st East-West Shrine Game, held Jan. 23, 2016 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game, which begins at 2 p.m. MT, will be televised live on NFL Network.
Cartwright, a Pueblo, Colo., native, enters his final college football game with 75 career receptions for 1,136 yards and 12 total touchdowns in 45 contests. He has helped CSU to a third consecutive bowl game appearance behind 18 catches for 279 yards and two scores in 2015.
The East-West Shrine Game has produced 72 NFL Hall of Famers - including former Colorado A&M star Fum McGraw - and 265 players who are currently on active NFL rosters. While the teams are divided by East and West, the players come together for the beneficiary of the event, Shriners Hospitals for Children, an international pediatric specialty health care system. Shriners Hospitals for Children is changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. The 22 hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Mexico provide advanced care for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate.
This will mark the third year in a row that a CSU player has participated in the prestigious game, joining Shaquil Barrett and Crockett Gillmore two years ago and Bernard Blake last year (Garrett Grayson was also invited to participate last year). In total, 42 Rams - plus coach Sonny Lubick - have played in the game. In addition to Cartwright, offensive lineman Sam Carlson and defensive back DeAndre Elliott last week accepted invitations to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, which will also take place Jan. 23.
