CSU-Bryant Box Score | CSU-UTEP Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz.
- During the second day of the Wildcat Invitational, Colorado State (7-12) finished with a split, defeating Bryant (3-4) before letting an early lead slip away against UTEP (3-16).

Colorado State, 7, Bryant 1
In its first game on Saturday, CSU overpowered Bryant, coming back from a one-run deficit to win after an explosive fifth inning.

The only time the Bulldogs would cross the plate would come in the third inning, when Bryant's Jessica Benacquista stole home to give her team a 1-0 lead. Quickly, though, junior Holly Reinke pinned down the Bulldogs, allowing just two hits for the remainder of the contest. She pitched a complete game, and earned her third win of the season after CSU's offense scored six runs in the fifth inning.

The Rams would tie the score in the fourth inning when freshman Savannah Clark, who singled, scored on a muffed throw by Bryant's shortstop. An inning later, though, is when CSU took control. Haley Hutton and Haley David led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but most of the damage came from three Bryant fielding errors. Both Hutton and David, in addition to Shae Rodriguez, scored unearned runs. Taylor Hutton reached on the error Rodriguez scored on, and Clark walked. This brought up junior Jaelyn Manzanares, who ended the inning with a bang, crushing the ball to right-center for a three-run home run. The home run was her first of the season.

Reinke closed the final two frames by allowing just one Bulldog to reach base. She struck out a season-most nine in the win, allowing zero earned runs and just four hits and zero walks. Six Rams had hits in the victory, including two apiece by David and freshman Madison Kilcrease.

UTEP 9, Colorado State 8
The second game of the day was a nail biter, as both teams held leads in a back-and-forth contest in which both teams kept on each other’s heels until the end of the game.

CSU opened up a big lead in the top of the first inning, scoring five times. Three of the first four batters walked, mixed in with a sacrifice bunt, to load the bases with one out. After UTEP forced Haley Hutton out at home on a fielder’s choice, Taylor Hutton produced a two-out single to center to bring in the game’s first two runs. It would be the first of four-consecutive singles for the Rams, as Manzanares, Madison Kilcrease and Taryn Arcarese each followed suit with RBI base hits.

The Miners, though, would respond with one run in their half of the first and six in the second to jump in front. They totaled 10 hits in the first two frames, including four in a row to begin the second before senior Molly Randle replaced Trinity Harrington in the circle. Even with the change, though, UTEP singled on the first two batters Randle faced before finally recording the first out of the inning.

Now trailing 7-5, CSU cut its deficit in half in the top of the third when Arcarese was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Taylor Hutton. UTEP switched pitchers at that point, and it worked, getting the next two batters to ground out to end the inning with the bases loaded.

Both teams had one runner reach base in their next turn at the plate, before CSU tied the game in the top of the fifth when Manzanares was able to take advantage of a couple Miners miscues. After walking, she advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

The tie would be short-lived, though, as UTEP jumped back in front in their half of the inning, as Kawehiokalani Netagne hit a two-run home run. CSU again cut the deficit in half, as David singled, stole second and scored unearned on a throwing error. With two on base and just one out, senior Danielle Wikre, who was representing the tying run, was thrown out at home during a double play to end the inning. Needing one run to extend the game, CSU went down in order in the seventh to end the game.

Harrington allowed five earned runs in one-plus inning of work. Randle pitched the final five innings, allowing four earned runs and took the loss after CSU evened the score at 7-7. Both Taylor Hutton and Manzanares recorded two apiece, while also scoring twice.

CSU closes the weekend Sunday against UT-Arlington at 11 a.m. MT. Live stats can be accessed here.
