Goalkeeper Hunter Peifer stops pair of first-half penalty kick attempts; Alex Lanning scores her second goal of the season
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Colorado State women's soccer team fell to the UNLV Rebels, 3-1, in a Mountain West match on Friday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Â
Colorado State goalkeeper Hunter Peifer (2-6-4) made four saves in the first half to keep the Rams (2-7-4, 0-3-2 MW) in the match, including stops on two Rebel penalty kick attempts. Peifer dove to her right to stop Katie Ballou's penalty kick attempt in the 15th minute before stopping conference points and goals leader Sophie Cortes on her penalty kick try two minutes later.
Â
Peifer is the first goalkeeper in program history to stop more than one penalty kick attempt in a single match, and the second to stop a penalty kick attempt in CSU's now-five-season history. The redshirt sophomore finished the match with six saves.
Â
UNLV (11-3-0, 3-2-0 MW) opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Ballou ripped a shot from approximately 35 yards out to the upper-right corner of CSU's goal, giving the defending Mountain West champions an early 1-0 edge.
Â
The Rams kept the Rebels off the board for the rest of the first half and for much of the second half before tying the match on Alex Lanning's goal in the 68th minute. Lanning, who was assisted by Taylor Steinke, fired the ball on a rope to the upper-left corner of the net for the equalizer and her second goal of the season.
Â
However, a turnover led to UNLV answering Lanning's tally in the 77th minute, as Sierra Galbraith poked the ball just past a diving Peifer and to the lower-right corner of the net. The Rebels added their final tally in the 83rd minute, as Michaela Morris shot from the left side of the goal area just inside the right post.
Â
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
On Hunter Peifer's performance:
"I can't remember one of my goalkeepers doing that (stopping two penalty kick attempts in a single match) in my career. That keeps us in it. It could've gotten ugly early, but because of that, we're able to withstand it. While it was still 1-0, she made another very good save, coming off of her line fearlessly. The second goal was just a fatal mistake by us (the turnover), and the third was just a good goal – probably the best of their three tonight."
Â
On Alex Lanning's goal:
"There was actually one more player open, but Alex chose 'upper-90' and scored. We were excited – you could feel we were back in it. That second half we played much better. I felt like we would get the equalizer, and we did. I also thought we were going to take the next step and get another, but we made that fatal mistake (turnover that led to second goal). We had expended a lot of energy getting back to 1-1, and it just wasn't going to be."
NOTES
- Hunter Peifer stopped the second and third saves by a Colorado State goalkeeper on penalty kick attempts in the program's now five-year history. The only other stop was made during the 2015 season.
- Taylor Steinke's assist on Alex Lanning's goal was the first of her career.
- Bailyn Furrow, Halley Havlicek and Alyssa Yoshida each played all 90 minutes on Friday night. Those 90 minutes marked career highs for each of Furrow and Yoshida.
