Mock paces Rams past 14 ranked teams with 16th-place individual finish

MADISON, Wis. – The 11th-ranked Colorado State men's cross country team placed sixth of 35 teams in a loaded field at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday afternoon.

Entering the meet as the sixth-highest ranked team at the meet, Colorado State met that expectation with a sixth-place team finish in the men's 8k. CSU placed behind only behind top-ranked Northern Arizona (first place), No. 3 Syracuse (third place), No. 4 Stanford (fourth place), No. 10 Furman (fifth place) and No. 25 Portland (second place). Overall, the Rams' men finished ahead of 14 ranked teams, including No. 6 Southern Utah.

The Rams were paced once again by senior Jerrell Mock, who placed 16th with an 8k time of 23:57.9. Cole Rockhold followed with a 27th-place finish and time of 24:06.8, while Eric Hamer clocked a time of 24:20.8 to join the two in the top 50. Grant Fischer placed 61st with a time of 24:25.3, and Wayde Hall rounded out CSU scorers with a 70th-place finish and time of 24:29.8.

CSU's women's team placed 29th of 34 teams in its first-ever invite to the meet. The Rams' top finisher for the second straight meet was senior McKenna Spillar, who placed 113th on Saturday with a time of 21:25.6. Ali Kallner (21:28.9) placed 124th, followed by Macy Kreutz in 128th (21:30.4) and Mary Franke in 139th (21:37.2). Dominque Ward rounded out CSU scorers with a 153rd-place finish and time of 21:46.1.

Competition in the "B" races was highlighted by the performance of Trent Powell, who clocked a time of 24:40.9 to place third overall and as the No. 2 collegian. Carson Hume also ran a notable race, placing 4th with a time of 24:59.5.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State cross country head coach Art Siemers
"I thought our men ran well. We faded a little bit over the final stretch, but that makes sense since we haven't done a lot of speed training lately. The guys fought hard and put themselves in a good position heading to conference after beating good Boise State and Air Force teams today. One of our big goals of the season is to win the conference for the first time ever and compete as a top-10 program. We took a step towards that today and we'll just keep getting better as the season goes on."

On Eric Hamer:
"Today we had five athletes run really, really well. Eric has had a breakthrough over the summer and has carried it through the season. He's gaining confidence in every race he does, and he and Cole work pretty well together."

On Wayde Hall:
"Probably the star racer of our team today was Wayde. He's a graduate transfer, and has been a sea-level guy at Minnesota. He was 70th at the open (men's "B" race) here last year and then 70th in the championship race today. That is a huge improvement in one year. So he was a star today because our No. 6 and No. 7 runners did not have great races today and a lot was on Wayde's shoulders to perform. He did that, just like he did at the Griak.

On Trent Powell:
"Trent's from Wisconsin, so he had a lot of fans out there today. He was in the open race (men's "B" race) and looked phenomenal. He's going to be a contender for our top six or so come conference. That was probably the best cross country race of his life and really got him to the next level."

On the women's team:
"I think the one thing that our women learned today – and it's a growing process because you don't have a lot of meets of this caliber – is just to have faith that we can get out a little bit harder. We did a great job racing with the women around us and moved up, but we were too far back at the start of the race. With some many good runners, and a course with such narrow turns, it's hard to pass people. We just need to get out a little harder and race the women the way that we want to instead of getting out a little conservative. We didn't run our best, but that's what conference and regionals are going to be for."

NOTES
- Of the four Mountain West teams competing at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational (Colorado State, Air Force, Boise State and New Mexico), CSU three top-50 male finishers were the most. Air Force had two runners in the top 50, while New Mexico had one.
- Jerrell Mock finished higher than any other Mountain West athlete in the men's 8k championship race (New Mexico's Alexander Palm – 19th).
- Cole Rockhold was the third-highest finishing Mountain West runner, as he topped every runner in the conference other than Mock and UNM's Palm.
- Eric Hamer was one of six Mountain West athletes to finish in the top 50 on the men's side.
