Rams score in 82nd minute on goal from Taylor Steinke
GREELEY, Colo. - Colorado State freshman forward Taylor Steinke buried her first career goal in the 82nd minute at Northern Colorado, but the Rams were unable to come up with the equalizer and fell to the Bears, 2-1, on Thursday night from Jackson Stadium.
Steinke's finish came from just inside the right side of the goalie box. Her tally, which trimmed the Bears' lead to 2-1, came off of a corner kick service from Makenzi Taylor. CSU controlled possession at the end of the match, leading to a point-blank opportunity for senior Maddi Rodriguez in the final minutes. However, the would-be equalizer was turned aside by UNC goalkeeper Madeline Burdick to preserve the Bears' 2-1 advantage.
The first goal of the match came in the 27th minute. A CSU turnover just beyond midfield led to a scoring opportunity for the Bears' Mariel Gutierrez, who fired her shot just over the reach of CSU goalkeeper Paige Brandt and to the back-right side of the net. Gutierrez added her second goal in the 61st minute, as she bent a free-kick around the Rams' wall, past a diving Hunter Peifer and inside the near post.
Freshman Alyssa Yoshida led the Rams with three shots, including two on goal. Rodriguez finished the match with a pair of shots on goal, while Hannah Gerdin and Halley Havlicek accounted for the Rams' remaining shots on goal. Along with Yoshida and Rodriguez, each of Gerdin, Steinke and Taylor finished with multiple shots.
Brandt and Peifer split time in the Rams' goal on Thursday, playing 45 minutes each. Brandt (0-1-0) made two saves on 10 shots faced in the first half. Peifer stopped four shots on eight shots faced.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
"We played pretty well, but you guys have heard me talk a lot about that special player and their special player did what special players do. The first goal was world class, and she meant to do that. Then she bends a free-kick. If you take her (Northern Colorado's Mariel Gutierrez) off the field now it's zero-zero or maybe we win one-to-zero. From our team's standpoint, I thought we were going to get one (goal). We felt we might get another one, because we were on them, and on them, at the end."
On the first goal of the season
"We will see if we can build off of it. It feels hollow right now, but certainly got our team excited. It should, because you have to celebrate those moments. As our athletic director (Joe Parker) says, 'pause and celebrate,' and they did. We want to make sure we have more moments like that as we go forward. We'll be fine, and again, I will not refrain from tooting the horn of this group. They're going to get it done. They just have to believe that."
Colorado State freshman forward Taylor Steinke
On her goal:
"Towards the end (of the game) our adrenaline got high, and our opportunities started to present themselves a little more easily. We played with a lot more passion and intensity in the last ten minutes of play, which helped us get the goal. I just put the ball in the net, but it was everyone else's hard work that helped it."
NOTES
- Taylor Steinke's goal in the 82nd minute was the first by a Ram this season.
- Halley Havlicek, Caeley Lordemann and Beth Plentl each played the full 90 minutes of regulation.
- Alyssa Yoshida had career highs in shots (three) and shots on goal (two) at Northern Colorado.
- Ally Murphy-Pauletto made her first career start in a CSU uniform on Thursday night.
