Rams down Aggies, 5-1, on first hat trick in program history

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State freshman forward Ally Murphy-Pauletto recorded the first hat trick in program history to spark a 5-1 victory for the Rams over the New Mexico State Aggies on Friday afternoon from the new CSU Soccer Field.

CSU's (1-2-1) five goals are the most in a single match in program history, while the Rams' victory is their first at the new CSU Soccer Field. Murphy-Pauletto scored the first two tallies for the Rams in the 38th and 52nd minutes before the Rams broke the match open with three goals over the final 15 minutes.

Although New Mexico State (4-1-1) took the first five shots of the match, the momentum shifted when Murphy-Pauletto entered the match in the 19th minute. The Rams took 13 of the 16 shots by either team, as the freshman sent two shots wide before burying her next attempt. A deflected pass from freshman midfielder Karli Eheart at the top of the box found Murphy-Pauletto, who fired from the right side of the five-yard box and beat the New Mexico State goalkeeper to the middle of the net.

New Mexico State tied the contest on a goal by Aileen Galicia in the 46th minute, but the tie only lasted five minutes. With NMSU pinned in its own end of the field, Murphy-Pauletto turned over the Aggies from 18 yards out, took one dribble and shot the ball to the upper left half of the net for a 2-1 Rams lead.

Forward Alex Lanning put the likely dagger in the contest in the 75th minute of play when she chipped the ball to the back left of the New Mexico State net off assists from Lexi Swenson and Janelle Stone. The Rams added two more goals in the final two minutes, as Murphy-Pauletto clinched her hat trick on a cross from Alyssa Yoshida and Makenzi Taylor converted on a penalty kick.

The Rams finished with 22 shots (11 shots on goal), outshooting the Aggies, 22-6, over the final 67 minutes. Murphy-Pauletto accounted for six shots and four shots on goal, while Yoshida had four shots (two shots on goal) to go along with her assist. Each of Maddie Kessler, Lanning, Emma Shinsky, Taylor Steinke and Taylor accounted for additional shots on goal. Goalkeeper Hunter Peifer played all 90 minutes, making four saves in the Rams' win.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Bill Hempen
On the team's composure after giving a goal up after halftime:
"For this team to react the way they did is a big step in our development as a program. We have been in those moments before where we have not looked at each other and said to each other, 'how are we going to get through this?' Once they composed themselves - and instead of looking away - they looked at each other and said we have to get this one back. They did."

On Ally Murphy-Pauletto's performance:
"Here at CSU – in the past - the goals have sometimes been hard to come by. I talk to these kids and say, 'if you can give me six or seven goals, then I will be happy.' She's already halfway there with 15 games left to play. She is going to get every opportunity, and you can clearly see how hard she works. She is relentless. Sooner or later it gets old for defenders, and they did not have an answer for her today."

On the team's service ability:
"We have left-footed service, quality left-footed service, so we might as well take advantage of it. One of the things in the women's game that is a challenge for goalkeepers is high balls in the box. I tell our kids that - until the opposing goalkeeper can show us that she can defend that - I tell them to keep putting them under fire. Having the quality service is a bonus for us, especially left-footed service. Everyone is a right hander, but when you have Janelle (Stone), Makenzi (Taylor) and Maddie (Kessler) that's certainly a positive for us."

Colorado State freshman forward Ally Murphy-Pauletto
On how she feels following the contest
"I'm pretty excited. I've done it a few times in club (scored a hat trick), but never like that, in an atmosphere like this, with my whole team right there."

On being able to score after the contest was tied 1-1:
"We have been talking about keeping our energy up and being positive no matter what. One of our core values is resilience and the energy from the team flows through everyone. I was feeling excited, and getting it (the second goal) bumped everyone's energy again."
