Rams’ Eric Hamer and Carson Hume named to All-Mountain West First Team after placing second and third, respectively

SAN DIEGO – The 17th-ranked Colorado State men's cross country team placed third at the Mountain West Cross Country Championships, while the Rams finished seventh in women's competition at the conference meet on Friday morning from Morley Field at Balboa Park.

As a team, Colorado State's men finished with 76 points. The Rams received standout performances from seniors Eric Hamer (24:37.4) and Carson Hume (24:38.9), who led for the majority of the race before finishing in respective second place and third place positions. Senior Cole Rockhold (25:10.2) was the Rams' No. 3 scorer with a 16th-place finish, while senior Trent Powell (25:37.6) placed 27th and junior Satchel Caldwell (25:38.6) finished 28th to round out the Rams' top five.

The CSU men placed behind only No. 5 Boise State and No. 16 Air Force, and ahead of No. 13 Wyoming in the team scoring. While no runner from Boise State or Air Force finished as high as Hamer or Hume, each of the Broncos' top five placed in the top 15, while the Falcons had three in the top 10 and four in the top 18.

On the women's side, Colorado State placed within six points of the top five teams, finishing seventh based upon tiebreaking procedures despite tallying the same number of points as Nevada (155 points each). No. 3 New Mexico won the team title with 33 points, while No. 2 Boise State was second with 35 points. Senior Bailey Ness (21:33.0) was the Rams' top runner for the fourth straight meet, placing 19th. Freshman Lily Tomasula-Martin (21:53.6) was 24th to finish as the Rams' No. 2, while senior Ali Kallner clocked a time of 22:16.0 to finish 33rd overall and as the Rams' third scorer.

Senior Roxy Trotter (22:19.6) and junior Jenna Anderson (22:50.2) finished 35th and 49th, respectively, to round out the Rams' scorers. Junior Macy Kreutz (53rd, 22:57.8) and freshman Ivy Gonzales (23:02.3) filled the No. 6 and 7 spots for the Rams' women, while sophomore Jacob Brueckman (38th, 25:57.7) and freshman Maximilliano Martinez (48th, 26:33.8) completed the top seven for CSU's men's team.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State cross country head coach Art Siemers
On Eric Hamer and Carson Hume:
"Carson's had a big breakthrough the past two meets and I think he'll carry that over really well right through the end of the season. He was very aggressive early, and it was a narrow course, so he wanted to take the pace hard and led for almost the whole thing. (Wyoming's) Paul Roberts is a great runner and made a great move at the end to pass him, but after not being all-conference last year, Carson just had a really gutsy performance. Hamer closed really well, was tough and was in that top two most of the way. Carson and Eric worked really well together, but Paul was just too fast at the end. Those were two great performances. It's their goal to be All-Americans, and they beat multiple All-Americans today."

NOTES
  • Eric Hamer's All-Mountain West recognition for Friday's meet is the third of his career and second in cross country. Hamer also earned All-Mountain West honors in the 10,000 meters at the 2018 outdoor meet.
  • Carson Hume earns the first All-Mountain West accolade of his career with his performance on Friday.
  • Each of Hamer and Hume registered career-high finishes at the Mountain West Championships. Hamer's previous high finish at this meet was fifth in 2017, while Hume's previous best was 16th in 2016.
