AUSTIN, Texas – The Colorado State softball team continued its success at the Texas Classic with another 2-0 day defeating Incarnate Word and Texas. The Rams start the season 4-0 for the first time since 2014.
Game 1 vs. Incarnate Word
After a 14-9 victory over Incarnate Word on Friday, the Rams kept the momentum going into Saturday. CSU got on the board first in the third inning after Sarah Muzik stole second and forced the Cardinals' catcher into a throwing error, which allowed Ashley Michelena to score. Two batters later, Amber Nelson smashed a triple to center field to push two more runners across and give the Rams a 3-0 lead.
Incarnate Word responded in the fourth inning with its only run of the game after a RBI single brought a run in.
Colorado State added to its lead with a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to earn a 6-1 victory.
Ashley Michelena and Madison Kilcrease led the Rams with a pair of hits each, while Amber Nelson chalked up two RBI. Alison Petty started the game and hurled three innings before Larisa Petakoff came in and threw the remaining four innings of relief to earn the win. The pair allowed just one run on one hit, while striking out four batters.
Game 2 vs. Texas
After scoring 24 runs in its first three games, Colorado State was not even close to being done. The Rams offense made their mark on the board first against the Texas Classic host, Texas. Hayleigh Evans hit a sac fly in the top of the second to score Jordan Acosta who was pinch running to give CSU an early lead. Colorado State wasn't done, as Haley Donaldson recorded an easy RBI with a walk to push Danni Klein across and give the Rams a 2-0 lead.
Texas tied the game in the bottom of the second inning after a double to right scored two runs – the only runs the Longhorns would score the rest of the game.
The Rams broke the tie in the top of the fourth after Donaldson knocked an infield single to allow Ashley Michelena to score. Colorado State added a trio of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with two out as Hannah McCorkhill smashed a three-run homer to give the Rams a 6-2 lead.
CSU's defense made quick work in the bottom half of the seventh, forcing the Longhorns down in order to secure the victory.
Michelena paced the offense with two hits, while McCorkhill had three RBI and Donaldson had two. Bridgette Hutton went the distance in the circle, earning her second win of the season. The junior allowed just five hits and two runs in 30 batters faced.
Colorado State (4-0) will finish the Texas Classic tomorrow, playing Wisconsin at 9 am MT.
