FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State will begin the 2018 season in Austin, Texas at the Texas Classic this weekend. The Rams will play five games against three different opponents during the three days at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
The Rams will begin the tournament with games against Wisconsin at 10 am and Incarnate Word at 12:30 pm on Friday. Saturday, CSU will play Incarnate Word at 9 am and Texas at 12 pm. Colorado State will wrap up the weekend with a game against Wisconsin at 9 am. All games are listed in Mountain Time.

OPPONENT SCOUT
The Badgers: Wisconsin recorded a 35-17 record in 2017 and returns seven starters, including a pair of All-Big Ten honorees. Last season, the Badgers hit 42 home runs while holding their opponents to only 16. The Badgers lead the all-time series 4-2 after picking up a pair of wins last season in Fort Collins.

The Longhorns: Texas finished the 2017 season with a 33-26 record and made the NCAA Tournament. UT went 2-2 in the regional round, falling to No. 12 Texas A&M. Texas is receiving votes in first USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll. The Longhorns lead the all-time series 6-0 with all games played in Austin.

The Cardinals: Incarnate Word finished 13-40 last season and had its four seniors earn postseason conference honors. The Cardinals are under new direction as Joe DiPietro starts in 2018 after coaching at Temple.

Colorado State finished the 2017 season 28-22 overall and 9-15 in the Mountain West. The Rams posted a 2-3 record last season at the Texas Classic, picking up victories against Maryland.

SEASON OPENING RECORDS
Colorado State begins the season this weekend and Head Coach Jen Fisher is 3-4 in season openers. The Rams are 5-12 in openers since 2000. CSU recorded a 14-5 victory in five innings over Maryland in 2017 in Austin.
RAMS IN NON-LEAGUE PLAY
CSU held a 19-7 mark against non-conference competition in 2017. That includes a 10-3 record across the team's three home tournaments at Ram Field. It also included six wins against teams from the Big Ten or Big 12.

RAMS IN MW PLAY
CSU finished 2017 with a 9-15 mark in league play owning 2-1 series wins over San Diego State and San Jose State - who are tabbed to finish first and second in the Mountain West in 2018. Unsurprisingly, three-time all-conference shortstop Haley Hutton was a standout in league action, toting a .372/.465/.455 slash line with 32 hits and 30 runs scored in 24 games. Hannah McCorkhill had a team-leading six homers against MW foes, while Lauren Buchanan led with 20 RBI.

STALWART SHUTOUTS
The Rams had 12 shutouts on the 2017 season, which is the most the team has had since posting 14 in 2003. Larisa Petakoff and Bridgette Hutton each had four shutouts, while Kaylynn Pierce has added three. Twelve of CSU's 28 wins have come in shutout fashion.

MCCORKHILL SHOWCASING POWER
Junior Hannah McCorkhill started every game at first base for the Rams in 2017, and showed significant pop at the plate. McCorkhill entered her third season with three career homers, but exploded for 12 in 2017, which tied for the team lead. The 5-10 righty also led the team in RBI (45) and second in slugging (.649).
NELSON AT THE PLATE, GOOD LUCK
Junior Amber Nelson was a chore for defenses last season as she ranked No. 11 in the nation in on base percentage with a .539 mark. She also carried a big bat to the plate as she helped lead the offense with 12 home runs to compliment her team-best .391 batting average and .714 slugging percentage.
PETAKOFF'S PITCHING PROWESS
Redshirt senior Larisa Petakoff had a great junior season, holding the team's best ERA at 2.58 across 92.1 innings pitched. Her ERA also ranked third in the MW, and the best for a CSU pitcher since Jessica Strickland (2.05) in 2005.

GAMBOA HEATING UP AT THE HOT CORNER
Sophomore Corina Gamboa has established herself as a threat at third base. Last season, Gamboa posted eight RBI in her first nine MW games, with three doubles. The Chino, Calif., native had four RBI during a 3-for-4 outing against San Diego State on March 26, leading the Rams to the series-clinching victory. The rookie hit her first collegiate home run at Nevada on April 30.
