Colorado State Starts 2018 Season 2-0 at Texas Classic
2/9/2018 3:59:00 PM | Softball
Game 1 vs. Wisconsin
Wisconsin started the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to lead, 2-0 early. Colorado State made its mark on the board in the top of the second, after Corina Gamboa knocked a single into right field which allowed Haley Donaldson to advance to third and score on a Badger error.
Both teams were unproductive until the fourth when the Rams tied things up after Gamboa hit the first home run of the season – a solo – over the left field fence to tie the game, 2-2.
Wisconsin retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth following a single, but that didn't stand for long. CSU matched the score and then some after Ashley Michelena hit a two-RBI double to center, but got caught trying to stretch it to a triple. Michelena's double drove in two runs and gave the Rams a 4-3 advantage leading into the final six outs.
The Badgers went down in order in the sixth and had a pair of runners on base in the seventh before a pop out ended the game and gave the Rams their first victory.
Four different Rams registered two hits, while Michelena recorded two RBI and Gamboa one. Larisa Petakoff earned her first win of the season after entering the circle for Bridgette Hutton who started and hurled four innings. Petakoff threw the final three innings, allowing no runs and just one hit in 12 batters faced.

Game 2 vs. Incarnate Word
The bats came alive in the second game, as the Rams charged to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings, thanks to a two-run homer by Haley Donaldson.
Incarnate Word got on the board in the third after a triple and a single gave it a pair of runs. CSU retaliated with three runs in the bottom half of the inning after an RBI single by Sarah Muzik and a two-run home run by Corina Gamboa gave the Rams a 9-2 lead.
The Cardinals cut into the Colorado State lead in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring four runs to give the Rams a two-run lead at 9-7.
Colorado State added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to lead, 11-7 with six outs left in the game. UIW met the Rams runs in the sixth after a walk and a single scored two runners.
CSU came alive in the sixth with three singles, all which led to runs being scored and pushed the Rams' lead to 14-9.
Incarnate Word put a pair of runners on in the final inning, but the Rams' defense kept them there to secure the second win of the day.
The Rams irrupted for 15 hits in the win, including four different Rams tallying three. Haley Donaldson led the offense with four RBI and a 2-for-2 performance, while Lauren Buchanan followed with three RBI.
CSU used three pitchers in the win, as Bridgette Hutton earned her first victory of the season after hurling 2 2/3 innings of relief. The staff threw 11 strikeouts, while only allowing seven earned runs.
Colorado State (2-0) will be back in action at the Texas Classic tomorrow, playing Incarnate Word at 9 am MT and Texas at 12 pm MT.
