Havlicek and Ornes to lead team through spring schedule and through 2018 season

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State women's soccer team and head coach Bill Hempen have announced that rising junior Halley Havlicek and rising senior Kaija Ornes have been named team captains for 2018.

CSU's captains announcement comes in advance of its Wednesday spring game against Northern Colorado, which is set to be held at the on-campus football stadium at 7 p.m. MT. Details on that game can be found here. Havlicek, a defender from Spring Grove, Ill., has appeared in 37 matches with 35 starts through her first two collegiate seasons, while Ornes, a forward from Prior Lake, Minn., has appeared in 56 with starts in 43 for Colorado State.

"Our team has been heavily invested in culture, so selecting captains is a big deal," Hempen said. "Parameters are put in place as to what the team thinks a captain should represent. The selections of Kaija and Halley were a culmination of our process and I truly believe the team has selected wisely. These are two young women of high character that are ready to take this challenge head on."

Havlicek started all 19 matches for the Rams' back line in 2017, and led the team with 1,780 minutes played. The rising junior tied for the team lead with three goals in 2017, and recorded the sixth multi-goal game in CSU soccer's five-year history with a pair of tallies in the Rams' season finale against Wyoming on Oct. 27, 2017. Havlicek, who also ranked second on the team with seven points last season, has also been recognized off the field as a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete and Mountain West All-Academic.

Ornes enters 2018 with five career goals, tied for the third-most in a career in CSU soccer's five-year history. The rising senior forward was the Rams' leading scorer as a sophomore in 2016, pacing the team in points (eight) and goals (four), including the eventual game-winner against Denver (Aug. 19, 2016). Ornes made 17 appearances with 14 starts last season, and scored for the Rams in a 2-2 draw against Boise State on Oct. 13, 2017 at CSU Soccer Field.

Havlicek and Ornes will lead a Colorado State women's soccer team that returns 20 letterwinners and welcomes seven newcomers in 2018. The team is currently competing in its spring schedule, with details available here. Colorado State's most up-to-date spring roster can be found here.

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State rising junior defender Halley Havlicek
"Being voted captain was truly an inspirational moment because it revealed the belief and trust my teammates hold in me and my abilities to better this program. It is an honor to represent them as a captain of this team. As KK (Caeley Lordemann) and I discussed prior to voting for captains, we agreed that being a captain means being a friend - someone everyone can talk to - as well as always being an example on and off the field. I think being a captain specifically in this program means never letting us settle for less than we are capable of. In the past years, we have made great strides but now Kaija (Ornes) and I are ready to lead this program to places we've never been before. I am very excited to kick off our spring games and am looking forward to the rest of fall. Go Rams!"

Colorado State rising senior forward Kaija Ornes
"I'm deeply honored and humbled to have been voted captain for our team. We have a great senior class who are all talented players and all bring different gifts, ideas and leadership. I hope to help our team continue to build the foundation of our program at CSU through healthy communication, accountability, standards and hard work."
