Rams’ men ranked in top 10 for second consecutive regular-season poll; women in the national rankings for first time since 2008
NEW ORLEANS – The Colorado State men's cross country team has been ranked in the top 10 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) for the second straight week to open 2018, while the Rams' women's team made its debut in the USTFCCCA's national rankings at No. 30. The organization released the results of its week one national coaches' poll on Tuesday.
This marks the third time in program history that Colorado State men's cross country has been voted in the USTFCCCA's national top 10 in consecutive weeks. CSU's men's team was voted no lower than No. 9 from weeks five through seven last season, and was no lower than 10th from weeks two through four in 2003.
On the women's side, Colorado State enters the USTFCCCA's national rankings for the first time since the week one poll in 2008. Additionally, this marks the first time since week one of the 2005 season that Colorado State's women's and men's cross country teams have been ranked concurrently.
In regional rankings, CSU's men remain at fourth in the loaded Mountain Region behind only consensus national No. 1 Northern Arizona, No. 2 BYU and No. 7 Colorado. On the women's side, the Rams are fifth in the Mountain Region behind only No. 1 New Mexico, No. 2 Colorado, No. 10 Utah State and No. 17 BYU. The men's team's regional ranking matches its highest all-time from the USTFCCCA, while the women's team is in the region's top five in consecutive weeks for the first time since 2011.
Last time out, the Rams topped the men's field at the Wyoming Invite, defeating No. 16 Air Force, a partial squad from No. 7 Colorado and host Wyoming. Seniors Eric Hamer (second) and Cole Rockhold (third) as well as junior Forrest Barton (fourth) combined to take spots No. 2 through No. 4 individually at the meet.
The Rams' women placed third behind only No. 2 Colorado and only two points shy of Air Force despite two of their top projected returners, Ali Kallner and Macy Kreutz, being unavailable. Five of the Rams' top seven were newcomers, while four of those aforementioned runners were freshmen. One of those newcomers, Bailey Ness, paced the Rams with a fourth-place individual finish.
The Colorado State cross country team returns to action at one of the most competitive regular-season meets of the year, the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational. Action begins at 10 a.m. MT/11 a.m. CT on Sept. 28 from the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis.
