FORT COLLINS, Colo - Passion, commitment and purpose are the three characteristics which summarize all the work the Rams put in this season.
Â
After seven years spent developing and building the program from the ground up, coach Bill Hempen and the Colorado State women's soccer team are holding the standard high as they enter their first Mountain West Tournament.
Â
CSU slots in the bracket as the No. 3 seed and will take on sixth-seeded Fresno State on Tuesday (11 a.m.) at the Boas Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho. The Rams (12-5-2, 7-3-1 Mountain West) beat the Bulldogs (9-6-3, 5-4-2) 1-0 at CSU Field during the regular season.
Â
"This whole year we've been about preparing for one game at a time, and our plan isn't changing as we shift our focus into the conference tournament," senior midfielder Caeley Lordemann said. "It doesn't matter who we're playing, we're going to compete with the identity we've had all season and go do our best to get a win."
Â
With Lordemann rewriting the Colorado State offensive record book, and a passionate Rams team coming together, they're not wasting any time and are committed to bringing home a conference championship trophy.
Â
The level of dedication the players have for each other expands further than the soccer field. Sophomore goalkeeper Gabi McDonald believes the relationships developed away from the pitch are making all the difference in how they perform on game day.
Â
"It has been a lot of time and years of putting these pieces together and adding the components we needed," McDonald said. "This year it feels like all the pieces came together on and off the field; honestly this is the best and closest team I've ever been a part of, and it's making a difference in how we play."
Â
The foundation of a team is built around the players within, and the Rams have adopted a culture where everyone treats each other as if they're family. This construction has been a process since some seniors have been freshmen on campus, and it's put a purpose into this year's season.
Â
"It has been a great feeling to go through the past four years of struggling and building as a program to finally get to where we are now," senior defender Halley Havlicek said. "I couldn't be more proud reflecting on how far we've come as a team in my last four years here. It's paid off making it to conference and this team has something special, but we're not done yet."
