Inside Spring Football: Focus

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State football team returned to the field for the second consecutive day of spring practice, with a well-focused two-hour workout inside Canvas Stadium on Friday evening.
"Guys are flying around like they usually do in shorts," said head coach Mike Bobo. "I think for the most part, you hear guys being positive out there and challenging guys in the right way and I really think it's been good."
While it's customary to see that type of energy and positivity the first two days, Bobo also outlined the shortcomings with execution that have been prevalent in the early-going.
"There's a lot more bad than good right now because you're rolling in a bunch of guys, but I do like the excitement of our team, I do like the energy," Bobo added. "We're going into our third straight day tomorrow, so I'm sure that will be good even though it's our third straight day, because we're in pads. We'll see a bit of excitement, so it'll be interesting to see tomorrow when we put the ball down and add pads. We won't have any live drills tomorrow since it's our first day in pads, but we'll see who puts their face in there."
EARLY STANDOUTS: "E.J. Scott has had a good two days, not just offensively, but on special teams," Bobo said. "He's doing a nice job there. Collin Hill, Patrick O'Brien and Justice McCoy have done a lot of good things, all three of them. Patrick threw the ball extremely well today, and we got him a rack with the 'ones' at the end of practice. He did a nice job, so it's good to see those things."
TEAM NO-SLEEP: New cornerbacks coach Anthony Perkins started his job at CSU on Monday, and by Tuesday was already leading a meeting with his position group before diving into the on-field coaching on Thursday. He and his wife Janessa also recently celebrated the birth of their second child and moved across the country from his previous job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"It's been exciting and it's been a lot of fun, but it has definitely been a whirlwind getting out here," Perkins said. "From having a baby, to getting out here, to getting my family out here, getting our stuff here and starting spring ball, it's been a lot of fun, but I haven't gotten a lot of sleep."
Perkins, a Colorado native who played collegiately at CU, is excited about the group of cornerbacks he gets to coach at CSU.
"What I've learned these first couple days of practice is that they have a good foundation," Perkins said. "I'm definitely not starting from scratch, which is really exciting. The fact that I get to have these guys longer than just one season is exciting for me. The fact that we get to show up every day—and I know there's going to be an extended period getting better each and every day—I think for me, that makes the ceiling really high."
The Rams will hold their third consecutive spring practice, starting at 3 p.m., at Canvas Stadium on Saturday.
SEASON TICKET RENEWALS UNDERWAY: Season tickets renewals for the Rams' 2019 season began in January and will continue through March 29. New season ticket commitments also are being accepted by contacting the Rams Sales Team at 800-491-RAMS (7267) or visiting www.CSURams.com/tickets. What inspired you to choose CSU, being from California?
"I'm studying civil engineering, so the engineering program here and also the opportunity to play DI football for Coach Bobo and his staff. Also when I was on my visit, the family feeling here."
On what he'd like to do with his civil engineering degree...
"Eventually I would like to have my own design firm, but I'm focusing on structural engineering so the design and structure of buildings, bridges and things like that."
On his mentality on the football field...
"Do each play to the best of my ability and you have to believe that you're the best on the field and you're going to perform the best. You have to have the mentality that you're not going to be stopped and nobody's going to be able to get in the way of your goal."
Do you like mountains or beaches better?
"Mountains, definitely mountains. I love to fish, hike and all that stuff with the mountains. I do like the beach, but definitely more of a mountain person."
On his community involvement...
"Last spring I participated in the Green and Global trip and we went to Jamaica. It's an opportunity for student-athletes to get an abroad experience without having to miss seasons or training time. The last couple years I've done the Night to Shine event, which is a prom for people with special needs, and that was last Friday. I also have done Reading with the Rams, when we go read to school children and hang out with them for a little while. We've had a lot of events where we've had elementary kids come in here and we play different sports and try to hang out and talk with them."
On being a walk-on in the beginning and how he rose up from that?
"I just took it as an opportunity to kind of prove myself and just prove to the coaches and my teammates what I'm capable of, and to myself. There's only a select few walk-ons that are on scholarship, but it's an opportunity to show what I can do."
What restaurant would you suggest for anyone coming to Fort Collins?
"I'd say Stuft. I went there on my visit when I first got here and it's one of my favorites."
On his experience as a captain and how it has improved his leadership skills...
"It made me focus more on how I'm communicating to my teammates as well as my coaches. It also made me focus more on how to make my team get better and help bring ourselves together to work towards a common goal: Winning. I'd say it's also helped me be more accountable knowing that guys are counting on me."
What class have you enjoyed most at CSU or your favorite professor?
"Anything that has to do with structural engineering and statics. I took a couple of structural analysis classes, so any stuff that has to do with mass."
Most challenging class at CSU?
"Differential equations. I had no idea what was going on. It was hard to pass that class, it was a tough one."
On how he would describe the out-of-state transition from California...
"It's definitely different being away from home and family. The first couple years it was hard, but it makes CSU and Fort Collins become more of a home. It's also only a two-hour flight home, so it helps being pretty close. I'd say the people, community, this team and the students help make it more of a family-like atmosphere and makes that transition a lot easier."
