CSU is first visiting team to win a doubles point on the Rebels' home court this year
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – On a cold and breezy day, Colorado State gave 2018 Mountain West runner-up UNLV all it wanted before finally succumbing in a 4-3 loss to the hosts Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. In the league opener for both teams, the Rams fell to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in the conference while both the Rebels improved to 8-2 and 1-0 in the MW.
"It was a great match today," head coach Jarod Camerota said. "This one shows we can compete with everybody in the conference. We still need to keep working hard and getting better to peak for the conference tournament."
CSU picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3, becoming the first visiting team to win the doubles point in Las Vegas this season. Emily Kolbow and Stella Cliffe got a 6-1 victory at No. 2 followed by Riley Reeves and Emily Luetschwager winning 6-3 at No. 3.
From there, all but one singles match was a straight-set victory that set up the three-set drama for the dual win at No. 4. UNLV took the match lead with victories at No. 2 and No. 6 singles. The Rams earned wins at No. 3 from Cliffe, as she upset Izumi Asano, ranked #118 in the nation, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 5 from Nancy Ghanem, also winning 6-3, 6-3 over Connie Li to put CSU up 3-2 in the match. UNLV knotted the match at three with a win at No. 1. In the decisive match, Priscilla Palermo battled En-Pei Huang, losing the first set 7-6 before winning the second 6-1. In the third set, a single break of serve was the difference, as Huang won the final set 6-3.
NEXT UP:
The Rams will head to Lincoln, Neb. Next weekend to take on Nebraska on Saturday followed by a neutral-site match against North Dakota on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. CT/9 a.m. MT.
