Rams Split on Second Day of Texas Classic

2/8/2020 5:45:00 PM | Softball

Fisher has sent four different starters to the circle

AUSTIN, Texas – A quick start to the season led to a split of games on the second day of the Texas Classic, with Colorado State's softball team topping Lamar (4-1) before falling to host No. 6 Texas (12-3) in the nightcap.

Coach Jen Fisher has filled out a lineup in four games so far in 2020, and each one has put a different starter in the circle. Freshman Julia Cabral was effective in the win to open the day, with Taylor Gilmore drawing the tough assignment against a ranked team. Corina Gamboa has been productive at the plate, hitting .455 on the year with four RBI.

"Having two young freshmen in Danielle Serna and Cabral, we're just wanting to get them out there and get them some starts," Fisher said. "We're also wanting to roll out Jessica Jarecki and Taylor Gilmore, so that was the plan. We want to see where they all are, and we'd like for all of them to get confidence. There's such a long break from fall ball where you play eight games and they don't count on your schedule. There's so much growth and work in the weight room, so we really don't have a good gauge of what we have until we can get them out there and see."

Fisher figures the offense will come and go, especially in the early going, but she'd like to see her defense be more aggressive. The Rams weren't burdened by errors, but Fisher believes there were additional plays which could have been made to lessen the impact, particularly in the Texas loss.

Game One vs. Cardinals | Box Score
Using the third pitcher in the circle in as many game, freshman Julia Cabral picked up the victory in her CSU debut, allowing one unearned run while checking Lamar on two hits with just one walk. Cabral struck out a pair. CSU took the lead in the third inning as Corina Gamboa drove in a pair with a double, and the Rams pushed the lead forward on a wild hit and an error. Jordan Acosta had a hit and stole two bases.

Game Two vs. Longhorns | Box Score
Colorado State ran into trouble against No. 6 Texas in the second as the Longhorns scored four runs, then opened up the game with seven two-out runs in the fourth. The Rams scored three in the fifth when Neely Peterson and Jordan Acosta drew bases-loaded walks, and Ashley Michelena plated one with a fielder's choice. Kaitlyn Cook had the Rams' lone hit in the game.

Notes
- The Rams started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2018, the second time under Fischer. The Rams won their first seven that season.
- CSU is now 1-0 vs. Lamar; 1-9 vs. Texas.
- CSU used just three pitchers in the 2019 season.
- This is the third year the Rams have been to the Texas Classic.

Up Next
Colorado State will conclude the Texas Classic on Sunday, facing Wichita State at 9 a.m. MT. The game will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network.
