Both Colorado State Cross Country Programs Showcase Top-10 Finishes at Marquee Meet

MADISON, Wisc. – Sometimes a downside of departing a meet in cross country or track and field is one team not being as happy about their performance as the other, but that was not the case Friday for the Colorado State cross country programs after both placed within the top-10 at one of the most premier meets in the country, the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.

Out of the 36 total USTFCCCA ranked teams present at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, the men and women combined to defeat 14 of them. It's tough to determine whose race was more impressive. The 21st-ranked women continued their upward trend by placing sixth – above six teams that display a higher ranking. For the unranked men, it was a coming out party as they finished in 10th and in front of 15 ranked or receiving-votes teams. The women did not finish below a team ranked lower than them and the men represented the first unranked team to cross.

"Today, we went out to a giant meet like this and just performed, which is tough to do with all those ranked teams," head coach Art Siemers said. "It was a phenomenal job by both teams. I am very pleased with our teamwork on both sides. The women continued to take the next step in their development, while the men executed on their potential. Both performances serve well for our team heading into the championship portion of the schedule."

Throughout the 6,000-meter race, the women didn't waver outside of the top-10. At the 2K split, they were ninth, but by the 4K mark they moved to sixth where they held to the end. Senior Lily Tomasula-Martin was the first Ram to finish with a time of 20:45.3 for 35th place after advancing seven spots in the final 2K. Fellow seniors Lauren Offerman ran practically with Tomasula-Martin the whole race and finished 40th. Ashlyn Hillyard, Claudia Burgess and Annabel Stafford rounded out the scoring for the Rams for a tight 17.1-second pack split.

"It was a total team effort, but for Claudia [Burgess] to come back after an injury and race like that, she was an X factor," Siemers added. "She went from 80th to 50th in the last 2K"

Making their own mark on the meet was the CSU men who put together their best race of the season. Redshirt junior Mason Brown, a reigning All-Mountain West performer, paced the Rams with a time of 23:52.5 for 31st place. During the race, Mason steadily moved up each split from 60th-42th-37th-31st. After the first split, Tanner Norman jumped up 10 spots and stayed strong until he finished in 49th place with a time of 24:03. Jacob Brueckman, Dawson Besst, and Brock Dykema capped CSU's scoring and a 34.1-second pack split.

ART'S THOUGHTS
Head Coach Art Siemers
On the women…
"The women executed great. They got out better than they did in Oregon, which was a goal of theirs. They worked together very well, and it showed by the pack split. It is important on race day, because you train everyday in practice next to your teammates, so when you get to a meet and have them near than it is beneficial in moving up during tough parts. The team continues to just get better and better and build more confidence as we continue to beat more ranked teams.  We are believing that we can do some really special things. If you ask them, they'll say they want to be the best team in CSU history for women's cross country."

On the men…
"For a year and a half, we've been training at a really high level. We didn't have the leadership and the belief that we could execute at these big races like we do in training daily. It's hard to find yourself and teammates when you get in a field of 200+ runners and the best ranked teams in the country. It takes experience and good leadership – two things that we now have. The men proved that today. The last time that the men's team placed 10th at Nuttycombe, they were 17th at the NCAA Championship, so they know they can be a top-20 team. I think we are just going to continue to improve."
