CSU Cross Country Women Will Run at NCAA Championships on Nov. 20
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Earlier this calendar year, the Colorado State women's cross country team huddled together in hopes to hear their name get called in the NCAA Selection Show for the shortened COVID season, but for the fall edition on Saturday afternoon there was no doubt.
Â
The entire women's cross country team that made it to the national meet in March returned and the grew upon the success the team made by earning their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2006-07. The national meet, which will be take place a week from today on Nov. 20th in Tallahassee, Fla., consists of 31 teams – 18 automatic bids coming from the top two teams in each regional plus 13 at-large selections.
Â
Last season, the Rams finished 23rd at NCAAs for the program's first trip since 2007 and started this campaign ranked 27th in the USTFCCCA preseason poll. For the subsequent five polls, the Rams rose to as high as 12th in the nation, which was one spot away from the program's highest national ranking. Prompting the upward movement, CSU placed second at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, besting four higher-ranked team and finished sixth at the Nuttycombe Invitational, knocking off another six teams. At the Mountain West Championships, the Rams slipped for the first time, allowing an unranked Utah State team to finish above them, which dropped them down to 19th in the rankings. However, the rebound came this past Friday with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Regional as CSU bested another two higher-ranked squads to cement their likelihood of an at-large bid.
Â
The fourth-place finish at regionals marked CSU's best since 2007 when CSU won the event. Since then, CSU's best results were three fifth place showings, which came from 2010-13. The Rams' best finish at the NCAA Championships is 12th, which came in 1997.
