CSU Women Notched the Program’s Fifth Top-20 Finish at Nationals

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Another step forward was taken for the Colorado State women's cross country team and program with a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at the Apalachee Regional Park.

The finish marks the program's fifth top-20 finish out of 11 appearances. Colorado State returned its entire lineup from last season in which the team reached the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2009 and finished 23rd.

Prior to Saturday, the Rams had beaten a dozen teams throughout the season that were ranked higher than them and conclude that number at 15 after placing above No. 12 Florida State, No. 14 Utah and No. 17 Michigan. The Rams entered the race ranked No. 18 nationally, and will conclude the season at No. 17, which is tied for the fourth-best finish in program history next to 2000's 17th finish.

"I'm really proud of the women," head coach Art Siemers said. "We had a little bit of a tough start. We were in the middle on the starting line, which can be tough if you don't get out right away. Plus, the course is so fast, and it starts with a downhill section. One of our runners fell and had to get up just a half mile in, but we rebounded well throughout the race and improved each split. They found each other and worked together. It's our best finish in a long time, so it is pretty special for these ladies. The strength today was in our pack. I'm really proud of the work ethic that our women's team continues to display. They work so well together and are motivational to be around. I think the future is bright with our program."

CSU's five-runner pack split was a mere 13.6 seconds in the 6,000-meter race. Finishing first for the Rams, senior Lily Tomasula-Martin crossed at 20:26.1 for 88th place. Annabel Stafford was next in 94th place, before the trio of Lauren Offerman (128th), Ashlyn Hillyard (130th) and Claudia Burgess (131st) rounded on the scoring and completed the tight pack split. The Rams' last runners were far behind either at 145th and 155th for Ivy Gonzales and Emily Chaston, respectively.
