Mountain West Coaches Pinned Colorado State to Finish Sixth

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – A sign of the season on the horizon is the Mountain West Preseason Coaches Poll in which Colorado State was picked to finish sixth according to the league's 12 head coaches, announced Thursday afternoon.

The 2019 version had the Rams at 10th before the program put together their best season in its seven-year existence to finish third with a 7-3-1 conference record. The Rams earned the No. 3-seed at the conference tournament but fell to Fresno State in penalty kicks. Head coach Bill Hempen was awarded MW Coach of the Year, while the Rams tallied four first team honors, one second team nod and two all-newcomer accolades.

The Rams will look to continue that upward trend in the revised 2020-21 season that features some changes. The MW has split into two divisions – Mountain and West – with the Rams fitting into the former along with Air Force, Colorado College, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming. The West division consists of Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State and UNLV. The two divisions will not play each other but have a 10-game home-and-home series with the leaders of each division meeting for the conference championship en lieu of a conference tournament.

Picked to capture the 2021 Spring Mountain West Women's Soccer Championship as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches was Boise State and San Diego State. The two shared the 2019 regular-season title and met in the tournament championship game in which the Broncos prevailed to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

New Mexico, Fresno State and San Jose State fit in ahead of the Rams in the preseason poll. With four West division teams ahead of the Rams, Colorado State fits into the No. 2 spot in the Mountain division and goes up against the team ahead of them to start the season.

The Rams will start play at home next Friday, March 5th against the Lobos who are the only other team in CSU's division to reach last season's conference tournament. The two teams will make it a true bookend series as they conclude the schedule in Albuquerque on April 11th.
