Rams Split Opener at Nevada

Colorado State dropped the first game, but responded in the second with 12 runs to setup a rubber match for Sunday.

RENO, Nev. – The Colorado State softball team started the day slow in the first game of the doubleheader against Nevada, not registering a hit until the third inning before dropping the contest 5-3. The Rams responded in the second game exploding for 12 runs in a complete-game shutout by pitcher Julia Cabral to set Sunday's contests up for a rubber match.
 
GAME ONE | Box Score
Nevada put the first runs of the day on the board in the second frame off of three hits. The Wolf Pack added a run in the fourth on a walk before scoring two more runs in the fifth. Colorado State finally pushed a run across in the sixth after Haley Donaldson hit a solo homer. Corina Gamboa followed later in the inning with a two-run homer to put the score at 5-3. The Rams put a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but was unable to convert. Gamboa finished with a pair of hits and two RBI. Jessica Jarecki was given the loss after allowing five runs and striking out eight.
 
 
GAME TWO | Box Score
The Rams exploded for 12 hits and 12 runs in the shutout, led by Haley Donaldson who finished 3-for-4 with six RBI and two runs scored. Both Tara Shadowen and Ashley Michelena also recorded a multiple-hit game, each having two hits. Donaldson continued swinging her big bat, registering her second homerun of the game in the fifth. Maya Matsubara also added a long shot to help the Rams' offense scoring the first runs of the game in the second frame. Julia Cabral hurled the complete-game shutout, her first of her career, allowing just two hits in the rout. She also walked just two batters and stuck out four. Colorado State put runs on the board in every inning except the first.

Colorado State will finish the series at Nevada on Sunday, with a 1 p.m., MT first pitch.
