Rams Fall to Cowgirls in Home Finale

4/3/2021 6:23:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Colorado State Yields Three Second-Half Goals

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – Emotions were running high. Seniors were reflecting on their time as a Ram, and the Border War contest already had the team on edge.

With only three games left in the season, Colorado State women's soccer finished out its home schedule on Saturday against Wyoming.

Historically, the Rams have never beaten the Cowgirls, but with Wyoming's losing record (1-5), Colorado State (2-1-1) had a legitimate shot of taking the game away.

"I think that it's always competitive game, because we've never gotten the result over this team," senior Taylor Steinke said. "At the end of the day, we needed to channel our pregame a little bit better and rally behind the fact that we needed to get the W, instead of getting behind the fact that it was a special day. It's super sentimental and meaningful to us; we should've prepared a little bit differently."

Ultimately the Rams fell to the Cowgirls 3-0, with each goal in the second half of the game. The Cowgirls scored their first within the first minute, taking the team by surprise. The following two goals were scored six minutes apart, at 50:47, and again at 56:42.

During the match, Colorado State compiled 15 shots and had 10 shots on the goal, yet not a single one yielded success. Alternatively, the Cowgirls put up six shots and four on the goal, three of which tallied a point.

"The game is cruel," coach Bill Hempen said. "And I said that at halftime. I hate this game, because in the first half of the match, we had a legitimate chance to score and we gave it to a player that was offsides. They came and took it from us in the second half. They're a good group of kids over there and they fought like heck for each other, and I think our kids did as well. The game is cruel, and we definitely had our chances. That's about it."

Junior Gracie Armstrong put up five shots for the Rams, with Steinke following not far behind. Between the two, there wasn't enough momentum to keep the team on top of their rival.

According to Hempen, the biggest factor influencing the loss on Saturday was the lack of games the team has been able to complete. After only two games played after the beginning of the season, the team took a nineteen-day break between games due to cancellations.

"We've played five games, and that's not enough," Hempen said. "We're out here all fall, but you're not playing against people who are pushing and shoving like that. I didn't have any issues with how they played, none. It's a fine balance of training to play game-like and training to roll an ankle."

Even though there are still two games left of the conference season, Hempen is skeptical there will be enough time to make up for the break.

Despite the loss, the coach still saw plenty of positives coming out of this game. He plans to work on improving the team's accuracy on the field.

"We have so many last-pass chances that we just kicked out of bounds," Hempen said. "The kicks were too hard, and our players just couldn't catch up to them. We need to be more precise. The ball, where it was played, and who it was played to was all appropriate."

Colorado State's practice will be put to the test as they hit the road to face Utah State on April 9th.

The next game becomes the next chance to make the changes, with Saturday's loss a recent reminder.

"We're a better team than we showed," Steinke said. "We need to reset in practice, get more touches on the ball, and come back with a fire. Obviously, that wasn't good enough and we have the ability to make it to the tournament, we just need to show it a little bit better."
