Rams Run Lights Out in the Distance

Track & Field Completes West Coast Relays and Day One of Rock Chalk Classic
CLOVIS, Calif. / LAWRENCE, Kan. – Literally, the lights went out at Veterans Memorial Stadium minutes before the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:15 p.m. MT, delaying the meet for over an hour Friday evening at the West Coast Relays.
Â
This came after the women's 1,500m saw Megan Mooney, a graduate transfer from Florida State, clock a 4:23.22 – the second-best time in school history for her second race as a Ram. Which came after all four Ram men in the 1,500 also notched top-20 times in the school record book led by Jacob Brueckman that finished second with a time of 3:42.96 for the fifth-best time in Colorado State history.
Â
For Mooney, originally from Broomfield, Colo., it marked the eighth-best time in the Mountain West this season. Brueckman, however, now sits second in the conference.
Â
The day out in California started CSU's split day of competition as there was another contingent of Rams at the Rock Chalk Classic in Lawrence, Kan., but ironically the first start gun still went off first on the west coast. The reasoning was because it's the longest race – the 10,000 – and to accommodate some of the several mountain-est schools that flocked to the premier sea-level meet before their respective conference meets. On the men's side, three Rams raced with Mason Brown finishing first among the group in 10th place at 29:50.06 – good for 16th all-time in the green and gold. After in the women's portion, Lily Tomasula-Martin also placed 10th at 34:35.81, which jumped her six spots to eight all-time in the record book.
Â
Cali Rams after that took a break and the Rams roaming the plains began day one of the two-day meet in what was a windy one for the sprinters. If the wind factor didn't make the times eligible to go into the record book there would be two new names to the 200m top-10 lists. The times do still improve their spots on the conference and national list which did so for six Rams including Tom Willems, Jessica Ozoude, and Janyah Jasper but mostly benefiting Willems who finished that 200m at 21.30.
Â
The same race – the steeplechase – that the Cali Rams got stopped at was the best performance in Lawrence, Kan. Only a few distance Rams went to this meet, but Sydney Petersen made the most of it, finishing sixth with a time of 11:03.23, which to 11th all-time in the steeple. Other notable performances was Yolonda Johnson in the 400-meter hurdles and the men long jump tandem of Cory Taylor and Isa Bynum who put in career-bests and season-bests, respectively.
Â
The midday 800 back in Clovis saw Bailee Carr finish second at 2:07.78 for fourth in school history, moving her from the previous sixth spot. Later is when the 1500 concluded and the power outage that was occurring in the surrounding area hit Veterans Memorial Stadium. Lights turned back on at 10 p.m. local time and continued/finals results can be found on live results and a FloTrack live stream.
Â
The Rock Chalk Classic Day two gets underway at 10 a.m. for the discus and 11:30 a.m. for the track meets with the 4x400m relay representing the last scheduled event start of the meet at 3 p.m. MT. To follow along there are live results.
