Rams Come Up Short on Opening Day

Peyton Allen homered twice, Kaitlyn Cook once on Friday.
FULLERTON, Calif. – Peyton Allen recorded two homers – both happening during her first at bats of the games – as Colorado State suffered a pair of one-run losses in the season opening day at the Easton Classic. The Rams led in both games early, but could not hang on as they dropped the opener to San Diego (2-1) and Ole Miss (7-6).

Game One vs. San Diego | Box Score
Colorado State got on the board early as Peyton Allen saw three pitches before sending a solo shot over the left-field fence to give the Rams the early lead. Julia Cabral kept San Diego silent through the game, holding a no-hitter until the fifth inning. The Toreros had runners in scoring position before the Rams put them down in order to get off the field. San Diego used a big sixth inning, recording two runs on three hits and a CSU error to score a pair of runs to take the lead. Colorado State put a runner on base via an Ashley Michelena hit with one out, but left her there dropping the season opener, 2-1.

Julia Cabral was tagged with the loss after throwing the six innings, allowing two runs on four hits. She faced 26 batters and struck out three. The Rams tallied six hits in the loss, leaving eight runners stranded on base.

The Rams started the second game of the day with an explosive first inning, scoring four runs off five hits. Peyton Allen again scored first for Colorado State after hitting her second homer in as many games. CSU's offense continued through the inning as Hailey Smith followed with a double before three singles gave the Rams a 3-0 start. Colorado State loaded the bases with two outs before Morgan Crosby drew a walk to push another run across home.

Ole Miss responded in the third, pulling out six runs on six hits to take the lead. The Rebels scored their first run off a leadoff double and then a single. CSU had two outs before three-straight hits scored three more runs. The Rebels finished the frame loading the bases before a base-hit single scored another pair of runs to cap the inning.

Colorado State cut into the deficit in the home half of the inning as Kaitlyn Cook led off with a solo homer. Ole Miss pushed its lead back to two in the fourth after a double and a single scored a run.

The Rams pushed back to within one in the sixth after Hailey Smith hit a sac fly. Morgan Crosby doubled to start the frame before moving to third during an error at the next at bat and finally scored two batters later from Smith. Â

CSU put Ole Miss down in order in the seventh and looked to complete the comeback, but failed to register a hit in its final three outs.

Both Danielle Serna and Kaitlyn Cook led the Rams with a pair of hits, including a homer from Cook in the third. Hailey Smith and Morgan Crosby both recorded extra-base hits, each knocking a double. Serna started in the circle for CSU and hurled 2 2/3 innings before Sydney Hornbuckle came in on relief in the third inning. Hornbuckle finished the final 4 1/3 inning, facing 19 batters and striking out four. The pair each allowed five hits, while Hornbuckle was given the loss.
