Rams Go Extras with Bears

Colorado State and Cal went nine frames in the Easton Classic finale, as CSU suffered a 2-1 loss.
FULLERTON, Calif. – It was the final day of the Easton Classic in California and Colorado State was looking to pick up another victory before heading back to Centennial State. The Rams faced Cal in the finale and the game went quickly as there were a combined four hits through the seven innings, but fell 2-1 in extras.

Cal recorded the first action of the game, recording the first hit in the bottom of the second. The Rams broke up the perfect game in the fourth after Ashley Michelena led off the inning with a bunt single. Both teams went down in order with the exception of the Bears knocking a double in the fifth and Danielle Serna hitting a single in the seventh.

In extras and the international tie breaker rule in play, Colorado State scored the first run of the game in the eighth after Hailey Smith hit a RBI single up the middle to score Gracie Taylor who was placed at second. Cal responded in its first chance in extras after a throwing error while stealing third scored the tying run.

The Rams went down in order in the ninth before Cal registered a pair of singles to score the winning run on a squeeze bunt.
CSU finished with three hits in the loss with Michelena, Serna and Smith each tallying one. Both Morgan Crosby and Ashley York swiped a base. Sydney Hornbuckle was tagged with the loss after hurling 8 1/3 innings and allowing two runs – both not earned. She also struck out five batters and walked just one in 30 batters faced.
Colorado State will regroup and head to the Tracy Bread Classic in Denton, Texas Feb. 18-20.
