Assistant assignments include special teams, running backs, and cornerbacks.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With three full-time coaches officially added to the staff, head coach Jay Norvell's 2022 coaching staff is now complete. On Monday, Tommy Perry (special teams), Jeremy Moses (running backs), and Marcus Patton (cornerbacks) were announced to bring the assistant coach count to the NCAA-maximum of 10.
Â
On offense, the addition of Moses as the running backs coach required position shuffling from previously announced assignments. Chad Savage, initially tabbed to lead the tight ends, will now lead the wide receivers while still serving as the recruiting coordinator. James Finley, previously tabbed to lead the running backs, moves over to coach the tight ends.
Â
Perry reunites with Norvell as the two worked together during Norvell's first three seasons at Nevada where Perry coached in the same role. From 2020-21, Perry helped coach Jeff Traylor and the UTSA Roadrunners to a mountain of program firsts, including the program's first-ever national ranking and conference championship in 2021.Â
Â
While with UTSA, kicker Hunter Duplessis earned All-American honors on and off the field as he was named an honorable mention All-American by Phil Steele in 2020 and a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2021. Punter Lucas Dean was a second team All-American in 2020 as well after shattering UTSA's single-season punting average record en route to being named C-USA Special Teams Player of the Year Duplessis added All-Conference USA First Team honors in 2021 while Dean and snapper Caleb Cantrell were named second teamers.
Â
Filling the final offensive role, Moses – one of the most prolific quarterbacks in NCAA history - comes to Colorado State following seven seasons coaching at his alma mater, Stephen F. Austin, and three years in the high school ranks. From 2012-18, Moses was an assistant at SFA where he led the quarterbacks (2012-13), running backs (2014-16) and wide receivers (2017-18) while co-coordinating the offense in his final two seasons.
Â
As a player, Moses won the 2010 Walter Payton Award, the FCS-equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, and was named to numerous All-American teams during his career. He concluded his career as the NCAA's all-time leader in completions with 1,184. He won a pair of Southland Conference championships in his final two seasons.
Â
Wrapping up the defensive staff, Norvell and defensive coordinator Freddie Banks have tabbed Marcus Patton to lead the cornerbacks room. Patton comes to Colorado State after six seasons as the defensive coordinator at Tarleton State where he helped the Texans transition up to the FCS level in the spring of 2021. In their freshman campaign at the Division 1 level, Patton's defense held opponents to just 19.3 points per game and held four of their eight opponents under 200 yards of total offense.
Â
In 2018, Patton and the Texans defense helped the program to a school-record 12 wins and the first outright Lonestar Conference title in program history. The Texans ranked as high as No. 5 and advanced to the NCAA regional finals. During that run, Patton's secondary recorded 17 interceptions and 33 sacks in 13 games as well as two shutouts.
Â
Additional support staffers were also added including: Kaden Beavers (defensive graduate assistant), Chase Holbrook (Offensive Analyst), Nash O'Fallon (Assistant Director of Player Personnel), Bryson Travasos (defensive graduate assistant), and Jake Vang (Defensive Analyst).
