Rams Split Opening Day at Lopes Up Classic

Colorado State led late in game two against Grand Canyon, but couldn’t hold on.

Both teams scored runs in the opening frame but the Rams led after plating three in the first. The Raiders retook the lead in the following inning after scoring three runs on a pair of hits. Colorado State's offense started clicking in the third inning after Ashley York led off with a triple. CSU went on to record five hits – including two extra-base knocks – to score five runs and lead 8-4 after three. Both teams were quiet until the fifth, when the Rams again exploded with five hits to score four runs to end the game early. CSU had two outs in the final frame before tallying three-consecutive singles and the game-ending two-RBI double from Danielle Serna.

Colorado State finished with 12 hits, including three extra-base hits and swiped three bases. Julia Cabral earned her first win of the season, throwing all five innings with two earned runs and allowing just five hits in 24 batters faced. Three different Rams tallied multiple hits, Ashley Michelena, Ashley York and Hailey Smith each had two. Danielle Serna, Jalyn McGuffin and Hailey Smith all recorded two RBI apiece. The Rams drew four walks in the win, but left four runners on base to Colgate's five.

Game Two vs. GCU | Box Score

Game two of the day was a defensive battle as there were just two hits through the first two frames. GCU scored first in the open inning after two hits led to a run scored. Colorado State registered its first hit in the third after Brooke Bohlender led the frame off with a single, but nothing more. The Rams took the lead in the top of the fourth after two runs on two hits and pair of GCU error game them a 2-1 lead. CSU put two Lopes on base in the bottom of the sixth before a homer gave GCU a 4-2 lead. Colorado State was down to its final outs and put a runner 60 feet away, but left her there.

Brooke Bohlender led the Rams recording two of their four hits. Hailey Smith and Kaitlyn Cook tallied the two RBI for CSU in the fourth with Cook hitting a sac fly. Danielle Serna was tagged with the loss, hurling the six inning and allowing four earned runs on eight hits. She struck out two in the 28 batters faced.
