Colorado State takes down Florida Gulf Coast in game two of CSU Invitational
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Four Rams totaled nine or more kills in Colorado State's 3-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast Friday night at Moby Arena.
Â
After dropping the first two games of their four-game week, the Rams and Head Coach Tom Hilbert are starting to see the preseason learning process come to fruition with a win over the Eagles.
Â
"We learn something every time we play," said Hilbert. "Last night we learned some of our vulnerabilities and we actually got a little better in those areas today."
Â
The balanced offensive attack for the Rams included Kennedy Stanford who led the team with 11 kills, while Karina Leber, Annie Sullivan and Jacqi Van Liedfe all ended the night with nine kills.
Â
Colorado State dropped the opening set to the Eagles but came back in a crucial second set to tie up the match at one set a piece. In both of its losses this season, Colorado State has fallen behind 0-2. Battling back to regain momentum in the second set was something the Hilbert emphasized as an evident growth point.
Â
"[A balanced attack] gives them all confidence. Florida Gulf Coast actually had more kills than us in every set except the last one, but they also made more mistakes, and we didn't. I thought we played very cleanly and got better at staying aggressive during the course of the match," said Hilbert.
Â
The Rams also cleaned up their play from the service line, ending the night with only seven service errors compared to FGCU's ten. Junior Barret Power went on a 6-0 service run in the third set to send the Rams up 23-18 in the go-ahead set. Helena Perez went on a similar run in the fourth set, giving the Rams a 18-11 lead that would eventually hold out for victory.
Â
While the Eagles ended the night with 15 more kills than the Rams, Colorado State only had 11 attack errors all night compared to FGCU's 36. Hilbert credited the presence and movement of the Ram's front court blocking which disrupted the Eagles from getting into any rhythm offensively.
Â
Colorado State finishes up in its own invitational tournament tomorrow as they face Alabama State at 1:30 p.m. from Moby Arena.
