Colorado State claims its first sweep of the season
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Coming off a big win over Florida Gulf Coast last night, the Colorado State Rams earned their first sweep of the season as they dominantly took down Alabama State 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena.
Â
Saturday's game marked the last day of Colorado State's four game week, where the Rams were able to end the week in victory. CSU got off to a hot start, taking set one on Alabama State 25-14. However, the Hornets stormed back and led most of the way in the second set before a service run by libero Kate Yoshimoto led the Rams to a 4-0 run to end set two with the win, 25-23. Finally, Colorado State blew past Alabama State in the third set, taking it 25-8.
Â
Head Coach Tom Hilbert noted at the second set being a sign of fatigue after a long week of volleyball, but he was more than satisfied with Saturday's win.
Â
"I think our team is in good shape and handled the [four-game week] pretty well," Hilbert said. "Before the last set, I told the team, 'I'm trying to get your fire up to push yourself and challenge yourself to make plays,' and then they got nice and fired up there and played a really good last set."
Â
The offensive attack for the Rams was led by Kennedy Stanford who totaled 10 kills on the afternoon as well as four digs and two blocks on the defensive side of the ball. Junior Barrett Power and Senior Ciera Pritchard split time in the setter position for Colorado State with Pritchard starting the first set and Power starting the second and third.
Â
Looking to build depth to his roster before hitting the road for the Baylor Invitational next week, Hilbert said, "It puts those people in positions where they can learn and get a competitive memory bank going."
Â
Power ended the day with 22 assists while Pritchard added nine.
Â
Another part of Hilbert's depth chart included seeing offensive production from five different hitters. Stanford led the charge for the Rams while Karina Leber finished with eight kills, Annie Sullivan and Naeemah Weathers both added seven, and Jacqi Van Liefde rounded out the front row with six.
Â
Defensively, Colorado State was led by Ruby Kayser who finished with nine digs followed by Yoshimoto who had seven.
Â
The Rams will end their six-game home stand in victory as they make their first road trip to Waco, Texas to participate in the Baylor Invitational. Colorado State will play No. 9 Baylor to open up the weekend Thursday at 5 p.m. MT with a double-header Friday against Evansville and Arizona State.
