Kamara passing impressive names

FORT COLLINS – Mohamed Kamara keeps on churning out sacks. And he keeps passing a respected list of names.

In Saturday's 41-20 victory over Utah Tech, the defensive end recorded 1.5 sacks, the fourth consecutive game he's registered one. It's an impressive streak, but not his goal.

"That's not what I'm looking for. That's just what I do," Kamara said. "I know that a lot of teams are going to throw a lot of things at me -- guard, center, tight end -- but when it's one-on-one, I have to win. That's all I'm worried about when it's one-on-one, I have to win."

To which linebacker Chase Wilson replied: "And he does".

Kamara finished with 3.0 tackles for loss. He tied Cory James in career sacks with 24.0. His 36.5 career tackles for loss rank seventh, just behind Sean Moran. He's passed guys like Joey Porter and Adrian Ross, both Hall of Famers.

Coming from New Jersey, he wasn't familiar with those names. It didn't take him long to understand they were something special because the message wasn't hard to find. Constant reminders were all around him.

"I mean, I knew about them. I am from the East Coast, so I actually had to come here and do my history, but once I got in a groove, it was wow, these guys are like titans," Kamara said. "We have a beautiful stadium with all those guys' faces planted on every wall, so sometimes you just have to look and understand the history of CSU. It's been greatness for a long time."

He's now one of those players.

Colorado State coach Jay Norvell said he hears from NFL scouts all the time about the things Kamara does which impress them. Norvell already knew, and more people are finding out.

Week by week, sack by sack.

"He's so relentless. He just keeps coming," Norvell said. "I think at the end of the game they're double teaming him. His effort just keeps coming, and he's such a great example to our young players. He's having an amazing year."

More Than Catches

Everyone understands how good Tory Horton is at catching the ball. Then making people miss. And how he can find the end zone from anywhere on the field.

That's the flash. The dash.

He and his mates in the receiving room can also smash.

Horton threw a bulldozing block to help tight end Dallin Holker make a big gain, and when Horton went 76 yards down the sideline for one of his three touchdowns, Dylan Goffney threw a big block to help spring him.

Horton said it's part of the job description.

"We kind of made that one of our rules, not even just like a saying, we made it a rule that if you don't block you don't get the ball," Horton said. "That's the complete receiver we take into consideration. We go out there at practice and Coach Norvell is reminding everybody about the blocking, block down field, are you getting your money. It's something we all take pride in.

"We like to make it a goal and have fun with that, and that's something we really do enjoy. It's not like a consequence or a job for us, we actually like going out there and blocking. That shows we're more than just route runners and catchers."

Conference Time

The Rams haven't been perfect the past two weeks. Not even close. But they did post two victories and head into the Mountain West opener at Utah State this coming week at 2-2.

That matters.

"Extremely important, and it's encouraging. You talk about being resilient," linebacker Chase Wilson said. "There's no doubt. Like Mo said, we're a battle-tested team, a resilient team, but how great can we be if we don't come out slow these last two games?"

It's something the team would like to find out, what a consistent, four-quarter performance would look like, and Norvell anticipates they'll need them in the next eight weeks.

"Overall, I'm really proud of our effort. I know we have a long, long way to go, but we can certainly play much better than we played tonight," he said. "We talked about that in the locker room, and we're going to have to now. We're going to start conference play and we're going to play a lot of competitive teams, but I feel good about where we're at."
