Allen and Smith both homer versus the Jayhawks

SAN MARCOS, Tex. – The Colorado State softball team took on their second day of competition in the Texas State Tournament Saturday afternoon as the Rams split the day once again, beating UT San Antonio, 6-4 after falling to Kansas, 6-3.

In the Rams' win on the day versus the roadrunners of UTSA, Colorado State got out to an early deficit in the first inning as UTSA put up two runs in the first frame. The Rams were able to rally back in the third inning, plating four runs to take a 4-2 lead.

In the third, junior Sydney Hornbuckle got the inning started with a leadoff single before Jetta Nannen doubled to left center to put Rams at second and third with no outs. Jordan West earned the first RBI of the game for the Rams with a single, scoring Hornbuckle for the first run of the inning.

With Rams still at second and third, senior Peyton Allen drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Shortstop Maya Matsubara netted another Ram run with an infield single to tie the game at two. A Hailey Smith sacrifice fly followed by a Danielle Serna single would bring across two more runs for Colorado State.

UTSA responded with one run in the bottom half of the third to cut the lead to one run, but Colorado State continued to build its lead in the fifth inning as another Smith sac fly and a Brooke Bohlender RBI put the Rams up 6-3. The Roadrunners would add one more run in the sixth, but the complete game from Serna in the circle was enough to send to Rams to victory. Serna finished the day with six strikeouts while only allowing two hits.

Against Kansas, Colorado State jumped out to an early lead courtesy of a Smith solo home run in the second, but the Jayhawks were able to add a run in the third and three more in the fifth. Facing a 4-1 deficit heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Rams put up a run in the fifth, via home run from Allen, and the sixth, capitalizing on a wild pitch, cutting Kansas' lead to one.

A two-run home run from Kansas in the seventh would be the insurance runs the Jayhawks needed to win game one, 6-3.

Colorado State's pitching staff of Serna, Giselle Bentley and Delaney Saugstad held the Jayhawks to just seven hits, but ultimately left the Rams with a 1-1 record on day two and a 2-2 record overall in the Texas State Tournament.

The Rams will compete in their final two games of the tournament tomorrow as they play UTSA again Saturday morning at 9 a.m. followed by a rematch with Texas State at 12:30 p.m.
