Rams battle their way to second five-set match in a row
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Colorado State volleyball team fell in its second five-set match in a row Friday night as the Rams dropped their third game of the season to No. 21 Arkansas, 3-2.
Facing their third ranked opponent in just four games to start the 2023 campaign, the Rams began their first true road trip of the year falling to the Razorbacks in set one 25-21 before reversing the score to win the second set 25-21. Even at one, Arkansas took set three 25-18. Able to respond again, the Rams won set four 25-20. In the fifth set, the Rams were unable to keep momentum on their side, falling 15-12 in the final frame.
Outside of the third set, neither team was able to pull more than five points in front of the other, making for an even match with both teams trading side-outs more than scoring runs.Â
Kennedy Stanford once again led the Rams in kills with 18 as the senior outside hitter continues to be the go to option for Colorado State across all six rotations. She also finished the night with 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.Â
Colorado State's middle blockers each performed well in Friday night's loss as seniors Karina Leber and Naeemah Weathers each totaled four blocks with Leber rallying up 13 kills followed by Weathers with 12.Â
The Rams' block defense was a strong presence throughout the whole match acting as an energy generator every time Colorado State was able to stuff the Razorbacks. As a team, the Rams finished the night with 16 block assists with six of them coming from redshirt junior Malaya Jones. Jones also added 13 kills from the right side of the court.
Colorado State out-blocked the Razorbacks in total block 9-7 and out-dug Arkansas 79-68 on defense.
Energy remained high for the Rams through all five sets as they looked to complete the ranked upset on the road, but they fell just short of a revenge win in 2023 after being swept in Moby Arena in 2022.
Other key contributors include senior setter Emery Herman who finished with 52 assists on the night, just four assists off her career high as well as redshirt sophomore libero Kate Yoshimoto recorded her first 20-dig game of the season.
Colorado State will continue its time in Fayetteville as the Rams face off with the Michigan Wolverines in a neutral site match Saturday at 1 p.m. before making the short drive to Conway, Arkansas Sunday to play against the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears Sunday at 11 a.m.
