Colorado State drops to first two ranked opponents of the season
AUSTIN, Tex. – The Colorado State softball teams fell in both game on day one of the Lone Star State Invitational Friday night as the Rams dropped their opening game to No. 12 Stanford 6-1 before falling to host team, No. 2 Texas 7-0.
Â
Game one began with Stanford scoring a run in each of the three opening innings, but with Colorado State totaling two hits in the second innings on top of some lockdown defense including a diving grab from left fielder Molly Gates, the Rams were ready to get on the board.
Â
In the bottom of the third, senior Sydney Hornbuckle helped her starting pitching role by drawing a leadoff walk to start the inning. Morgan Coleman would be entered to run for Hornbuckle before Coleman was advanced to second via a sacrifice bunt by Ashley York.
Â
After another walk to Matsubara, a Danielle Serna single loaded the bases with Hailey Smith on deck. Smith hit a deep fly ball to the right field warning track, but despite wanting it to be a long ball for the lead, Smith scored Coleman from third with a sacrifice fly.
Â
The score would remain locked at 3-1 until the top of the seventh inning and the fourth time through the lineup for the Cardinal against Hornbuckle. Back-to-back hits followed by a three-run home run from Stanford ended Hornbuckle's afternoon, inserting Delaney Saugstad.
Â
Hornbuckle would finish with three strikeouts in 25 at-bats with just over 100 pitches. Colorado State was unable to respond in the bottom of the seventh, falling 6-1.
Â
In game two, the Rams faced the No. 2 team in the nation in the Texas Longhorns. In this one, it was the hot hitting from Reese Atwood that got the Longhorns out to an early lead. A home run from Atwood in the first and third innings gave Texas the early 3-0 lead.
Â
The Longhorns added one more run in the third and three more runs in the fourth inning via a base-clearing double. Beyond the fourth inning, relief pitcher Giselle Bentley was able to keep the Texas offense under control, avoiding Texas scoring the one additional run they needed in order to run-rule the Rams.
Â
At the plate for Colorado State, despite being able to produce a run, York and Peyton Allen both totaled two hits on the day while Allen also added a walk to her 3-3 on base percentage. Abby Edwards added a hit as well to bring the Colorado State total to five.
Â
The Rams will continue their time at the Lone Star State Invitational and face Louisiana Saturday at 10:00 a.m. before a rematch with Texas at 3:30 p.m.
