AIR FORCE ACADEMY – Exactly how they hoped to start.
Â
Opening Mountain West play on the road, Colorado State's women's tennis team put checks in a lot of the right boxes, coming away with a 5-2 victory over Air Force on Friday.
Â
After taking the doubles point by prevailing at the top two lines, the Rams continued their solid play in singles by gaining victories from Zara Lennon, Radka Buzkova and Luana Avelar to clinch, then playing on, picked up another from Sarka Richterova.
Â
"We are happy to pull out a conference win. We started out strong in doubles which helped us get on the board," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Singles started out a little bit messy, but our players stayed calm and collected and found their rhythm. Our experience and trust in ourselves showed in close matches."
Â
With Buzkova pairing with Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya for a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, she continued to climb up in the school record book. Her 57 career singles wins leave her in eighth by herself, breaking a four-player tie; her 58 career doubles wins now have her tied for fourth with two others. She won her singles match at the No. 2 spot 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Â
Both Lennon and Avelar needed three sets to secure their positive decisions. Avelar was the first to finish, beating Isabella Flodin 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4. At the top spot, Lennon came back to win after dropping the first set 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 for the decisive fourth point. She and partner Sarah Weekley helped secure the doubles mark with a 6-3 tally.
Â
Sarka Richterova won her match with Joselyn Limbago at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.
Â
The Rams will stay on the road this weekend, traveling to Albuquerque, N.M. for a Sunday match (11 a.m.) with New Mexico.
