Team finishes with split of conference opening weekend
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The opening weekend became a split decision.
Â
Colorado State's women's tennis team fell 4-2 on Sunday to New Mexico on the road, picking up the two points at the top two lines in singles play.
Â
The Rams are now 5-6 on the season, 1-1 in the Mountain West.
Â
New Mexico grabbed the early advantage by rallying to take the doubles point, capturing the final two lines after Colorado State's top tandem of Radka Buzkova and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya won 6-3 to start the match. For Buzkova, it was career doubles No 59, putting her all alone in the fourth spot on the program list.
Â
Buzkova's 6-2, 6-0 win over Sarah O'Connor at No. 2 (the 58th of her career), tied the match at 1-all, but the Rams would only pick up one other victory, coming at the top spot when Zara Lennon swept past Katherine Jhang 6-2, 7-5. At that point, New Mexico led the match 3-2 after straight-sets wins at Nos. 4 and 6, then closing it out with a two-set win at No 5.
Â
"The Mountain West is a dogfight, and every match is a competitive match," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "I am pleased with the way Zara and Radka have been playing. They've been extremely focused during practice. They have also done a good job of staying committed to their game plans and playing matches one point at a time."
Â
The Rams will be at home this coming weekend with matches against Utah State (Saturday, 12:30 p.m.) and Boise State (Sunday, 12 p.m.)
