The Colorado State volleyball team remained undefeated in Mountain West Conference play with a four-game victory over UNLV, 30-26, 37-35, 19-30, 30-21. The Rams improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Rebels fell to 5-8 on the year and 1-1 in conference action.
Senior outside hitter Casey Bauer notched career-highs in both kills and digs with 26 and 16, respectively. She also hit a match-high .328. Senior outside hitter Tess Rogers was the only other Ram in double figure kills with 11. Junior libero Katherine Whitney recorded a season-high 19 digs and sophomore Amanda Fahnestock added 11 digs. Freshman setter Ashley Fornstrom tallied a career-high three solo blocks and had six on the evening, as well as two aces and nine digs. Bauer also had two aces, while senior middle blocker Dre Downs led the match with seven blocks.
"Casey was outstanding tonight," said head coach Tom Hilbert. "She has becomes a great outside hitter for us. Dre struggled because of our rhythm and we didn't pass very well so we couldn't get her the ball. Game two was really good for our team. I felt really good about that."
Sophomore outside hitter Brittani Lumsden led the Rebels with 12 kills, while outside hitter Michelle Banks chipped in 11 and middle blocker Lauren Miramontes added 10. Lumsden also led the team with 18 digs, while sophomore libero Jada Walker added 14 and middle blocker Mariana Pencheva led the team with six blocks.
The Rams tallied 19.5 blocks and hit .205 in the match, while UNLV hit just .112 with 12 blocks. The Rebels out-aced the Rams seven to six, but the Rams tallied 63 digs to UNLV's 58.
Bauer was dominant in game one, notching seven of the team's 17 kills in 16 swings. The Rams hit .256 with four blocks, while UNLV hit .105 with two blocks. The teams traded points, being tied at every point from 1-7. UNLV scored five of the next six points when the Rams called a timeout, trailing 12-8. The Rams closed within one at 13-12, but the Rebels again took a four-point lead at 17-13 after an ace serve by Walker and a CSU error. Two UNLV errors and a Bauer kill again saw the Rams pull within one at 17-16. In an error filled stretch, where there were nine errors in 10 points, the Rams took a 21-20 lead and UNLV called for a break. Barnes recorded a kill for the two-point Ram lead, which the team stretched to four for the victory, 30-26.
In the second game, Bauer notched nine kills, while Mokelki had three in the 37-35 win. There were 18 ties and nine lead changes with no team leading by more than four points. Neither team hit well, with the Rams hitting .071 and UNLV at .059.
After the long break, UNLV came out on fire, taking the early 6-1 lead and never trailing. UNLV hit .118 compared to .036 for the Rams. Rogers led the Rams with four kills, while Bauer chipped in two and Downs and Fornstrom both tallied three blocks.
The Rams refocused for the fourth game, winning 30-19.
