GREELEY, Colo. – Nothing builds confidence like a win. Colorado State’s tennis team got both Tuesday afternoon in a road triumph over Northern Colorado.
“We needed to get a little confidence back and the win today is just what we needed,” said Head Coach Jon Messick. This was a solid team effort.”
That effort snapped a four-match losing streak and built vital momentum heading into an important weekend in which the Rams (5-12, 0-6 Mountain West) will meet a pair of conference opponents, Air Force at home Saturday and Wyoming on the road Sunday, their final tune-ups before the MWC championships.
CSU battled windy conditions during Tuesday’s outdoor match, but Messick was pleased with how his team overcame adversity.
“I thought that our players handled what could have been a frustrating situation very well,” he said.
The Rams swept the three doubles matches to begin the competition, then registered wins in five of the six singles matches, including straight-sets victories by Lauren Strasburger (No. 2), Tori Arneson (No. 3), Greer Satherlie (No. 4) and Caitlin Fluegge (No. 6).
The win over UNC (5-14, 4-4 Big Sky) also was the Rams’ fourth consecutive victory over a non-conference opponent, with three of those four duals away from Fort Collins. UNC entered the day 4-2 in home duals.
CSU returns to Fort Collins Saturday for a scheduled 10 a.m. conference showdown with Air Force. The competition, scheduled to be the Rams’ first home outdoor match this season, is expected to take place at the Fort Collins Country Club in the northeast portion of the city. If rain washes out the match, CSU will meet Air Force Saturday night at Miramont Lifestyle Fitness in south Fort Collins.
The Rams close the regular-season slate at Wyoming on Sunday at 1 p.m. The conference championships begin April 22 in Albuquerque, N.M.
