CSU places second as a team on the women’s side; Rams’ men finish third in men’s team scoring

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State's Darby Gilfillan placed as the top individual collegiate finisher in the women's college 5k and Trent Powell placed second in men's competition to highlight action from the CSU Duals at the Hughes Stadium cross country course on Friday.

Gilfillan clocked a time of 17:35 to place first amongst all collegians (second including unattached runners). Other than Colorado's Brianna Schwartz and Madison Boreman (17:37 each), the next closest collegiate runner placed 23 seconds behind Gilfillan (Air Force's Jaci Smith – 17:58). Powell finished the men's 5k in 14:52, topping CU All-Americans Joe Klecker (fifth) and Zach Perrin (sixth).

In Division I competition, Colorado State placed second as a team on the women's side with 36 points, finishing one point behind preseason No. 1 Colorado (35 points). Preseason No. 29 Air Force (58 points) placed third on the women's side, followed by Wyoming (111 points) and Northern Colorado (136 points). McKenna Spillar (18:03) joined Gilfillan with a top-five finish among collegiate entries, while Ali Kallner (eighth – 18:15) and Macy Kreutz (10th - 18:17) each recorded top-10 results. Dominique Ward (18:21) rounded out CSU scorers with a 12th-place finish among the collegiate field.

The Rams scored 57 points in Division I competition on the men's side, placing third behind Colorado (19 points) and one point back of Air Force (56 points). Wyoming placed fourth in Division I scoring with 122 points, while Northern Colorado was fifth with 140 points. Satchel Caldwell was the Rams' second-highest finisher on the men's side, joining the top-10 points scorers (11th overall among collegians) with a time of 15:09. Forrest Barton (15:17) placed 14th in collegiate competition, while Andrew Forsyth (15:18) placed 15th and Jacob Brueckman (15:22) took 19th (16 points).

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State cross country head coach Art Siemers
"We kind of treat this meet as a 'rust-buster.' All of our student-athletes have been training hard all summer, because the summer can make or break your cross country season depending on how much consistent, hard base mileage you can get in. Our team – both men and women – pushed it to a whole new level this summer. They really want to be elite teams – everyone wants to be the best they can be and really work together as a unit. Every day we get closer to where we want to be as a team, and that shows when we get to the cross country course.

On the men's results:
"We sat out seven guys - including all five of our returners that were at the NCAA Championships – to make sure we could get our early season training and get ready for that big meet, the Griak (Roy Griak Invitational). We also needed to get some new guys some experience for them to step it up against some of Colorado's best guys. Trent (Powell) almost winning was the breakthrough that we expected, because he probably put in the best summer of training on our whole team. If h can break into the top five or start to get closer to being one of those elite runners, it'll make our team that much better."

On the women's results:
"Colorado is the No. 1 (women's) team in the country – they ran most of their women, a lot of them unattached – but we still ran really well against them and competed hard. For the past two years, Air Force has been putting the hammer to us, and today, we did that to them. That's a good step for our women in the right direction. Air Force was 25th in the nation last year – they ran all but one athlete - and we beat them by quite a bit. Our women want to go to the NCAA Championships – they're sick of staying home when our men go to the NCAA Championships. We're right where we want to be."

NOTES
- Friday marked the first time that Darby Gilfillan had topped a collegiate cross country field.
- Second place is Trent Powell's highest finish in a collegiate cross country race.
- Each of Matt Begeman, Jacob Brueckman, Vincent Del Conte, Wayde Hall, Bryan Hird and Abraham Merinar made their debuts in official cross country competition for Colorado State.
