Mock becomes the third individual to repeat as champion and the first repeat winner since 2003; Rams’ men win Griak for first time in program history
FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – Colorado State senior Jerrell Mock successfully defended his 2016 Roy Griak Invitational title with another individual championship at the 2017 meet to lead the 18th-ranked Rams' men to a team championship on Saturday from the Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Mock clocked an 8k time of 24:52.0 to become the third individual in meet history to repeat as the individual men's champion, as well as the first since 2002-03 (BYU's Kip Kangogo in 2002-03; Providence's Ben Noad in 1997-98). No other men's team in meet history has had the men's individual champion in three consecutive seasons. Jefferson Abbey started that streak for CSU with his individual title in 2015.
Mock's individual crown paced CSU's men to a 47-point performance, edging No. 25 Michigan State (55 points) for the Rams' first-ever team title at the Griak. Joining Mock in the top 10 were Cole Rockhold, who placed eighth with a time of 25:18.6, as well as Eric Hamer, who clocked a time of 25:27.1 for 10th place. Grant Fischer (25:29.4) placed just behind Hamer in 11th place, while Wayde Hall (25:47.2) finished in 17th..
The Rams finished sixth on the women's side, marking a sizable jump from their 13th-place finish at last year's Griak. The Rams' top individual on the women's side was senior McKenna Spillar, who ran the 6k in 22:35.3 for 30th place out of 179 individuals. Ali Kallner (22:46.3) joined her in the top 40, while Dominique Ward (22:48.7) placed 41st and Mary Franke (22:51.8) took 45th place. Macy Kreutz (23:14.4) rounded out CSU scorers with a 65th-place finish.
Rounding out CSU's top seven on the men's side were Forrest Barton (26:01.0) in 27th place and Satchel Caldwell (26:03.6) right behind in 28th place. The No. 6 and No. 7 runners for the Rams' women were Darby Gilfillan (70th place – 23:18.8) and Lily Tomasula-Martin (93rd place – 23:46.6).
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State cross country head coach Art Siemers
On Eric Hamer and Wayde Hall stepping up for top-15 finishes:
"Those guys stepping up is huge for our team. We have even more guys that can step up, but in these kinds of conditions, everybody takes the heat and humidity a little differently. But this is what a good team does. Guys step up when they need to and help the team. Our guys never gave up hope. It was a tough course – when you put the heat and the hills together…it's not easy."
On the performance by the women's team:
"Dom (Dominique Ward) and Mary (Franke) had very good races and McKenna (Spillar) has been very consistent for us. It's a step in the right direction for us. We really wanted to be a few teams higher, but it's a good start. We're just going to keep working hard. We have three weeks to prepare for the Wisconsin (Nuttycombe) – that's going to be the meet of the year. We're going to keep building on what we learned today for the next one."
STAT OF THE MEET
Every Ram that competed at the Roy Griak Invitational improved their respective finish from last year, with the exception of Jerrell Mock, who also finished first in 2016.
Three Rams that finished in the men's top 45 made remarkable improvements from last year's meet, including Forrest Barton (220-place improvement from 247th to 27th), Trent Powell (196-place improvement from 238th to 42nd) and Nick Costello (97-place improvement from 141st to 44th).
Notable strides from the 2016 meet on the women's side were by Mary Franke (168-place improvement from 213th to 45th) and McKenna Spillar (52-place improvement from 82nd to 30th).
